Capture Remote Control Signals

I would like to capture the codes of a remote control, not the one provided by Apple, using the built-in IR receiver on my Mac-Book Pro. I have tried "iremoted" but this tool only seems to recognize the Apple remote control. Is anyone out there familiar with a software tool I can use to accomplish this task?

I don't want to build an IR receiver, though I know how to do this,  to capture what I need on a Windows system; I just thought it would be easy to use an existing IR receiver.

Any help is appreciated.

The built in IR receiver in the MiniMac I have (i assume might be the same on the MacBook) is only setup to receive 6 different IR signals.  However there is a work around, with RemoteBuddy (http://www.iospirit.com/index.php) and a learning remote.  It essentially creates multiple instances of the standard apple remote allowing you to create more than 6 inputs.

Okay, your response is a worthy answer based on the way I phrased the question. I am not actually looking to expand control of my Mac beyond its current capabilities with a remote control; I guess I should explain was doing in further detail.

I read about how you can use your iPod as a remote control <http://features.engadget.com/2004/07/27/how-to-turn-your-ipod-in-to-a-universal-infrared-remote-control/>; an RC for your TV, Cable Box, VCR, DVD player, and other devices. In simple terms you capture the IR signal and convert it to sound; you store the sound file in your iTunes library and import it to your iPod in a play list, like "TV", at which point you insert a simple device in the earphone jack that coverts the sound back to IR signal and viola you have a remote control in your iPod. Since I asked this question I've found other alternatives that I am going to pursue.
