I have taken the harddrive out, and plugged it into my windows xp machine, and tried to use a utility called Macdrive - which sees macdrives within windows, it hasn't worked.
In disk management it sees the drive, but its GPT Protective Partition?
How can I get access to this, I need to get data off this drive. Cheers.

You will be able to read from the drive in windows if you install EXT2 IFS from http://www.fs-driver.org/d
After you have retrieved your files you can format the drive into NTFS by following this post:

And if you want to make a clone of your drive, including partitions and files check out Clonezilla: http://clonezilla.org/

Still a problem after reboot. The other alternative is to get a copy of Linux such as Ubuntu and run it from the live cd. It should mount your windows and external drives automatically and you can then copy your files across.
