In OS X the tools are available but you may have not installed them at the time of your original or last setup. There is a optional install mpkg on OS X dvd/ or cd/s called developer tools.(it may be listed under optional installs) Pop in your original install media and install those tools. Netstat will give you the info but in a little more static way then it sounds like you want. I would use the Bigtop app. Once you install developer tool the various tools will go to Applications/utilities. Open up Bigtop then click really anywhere but just as a point of reference click on the network box with a green button below it. An active graph will immediately spring up. You will still have to click again on the network choice on the left. This will then show you a nice gui graph with a green input line and a blue ouput line. X and y axis will be labeled in bits and time if I recall this aright. Hope this helps.
