It is a retail version and it did work in another mac. Since it's the retail version, any suggestions besides taking it to the Apple Store? It's an option but thought I would exhaust all avenues first.

Browse All TopicsWe just purchased a new Mac Pro G5 (2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor, 3GB Memory with 10.6 preinstalled & has since been updated to the 10.6.2 version). During software installation we found out that our Adobe Creative Suite CS2 software is not compatable with the Snow Leopard operating system. Due to budget constraints the decision was made to downgrade to our 10.5.6 OS that we own which does work with the CS2 software. I have inserted the DVD as the instructions suggest and tell the Mac to restart. During the restart I get tot he white screen with the grey apple on it and nothing else happens. Eventually the DVD quits spinning and the screen just sits there. I have attempted to just boot directly from the DVD and the same thing happens. I have also reset the PRAM to see if that would help but it doesn't. Does anyone have any suggests? I'm still able to boot up to the 10.6.2 version.

Since it's retail, it should work.
You could try cleaning the disc, as some optical drives are touchier than others.
One solution for cleaning: toothpaste. Sounds weird but if you cover the bottom of the disc in toothpaste, then rub warm water over it with a soft cloth until it's all gone, it can fix damaged discs.
If it still doesn't boot at that point, you could try putting in the disk while you're booted into 10.6.2, then go to system preferences, startup disc, and choose the 10.5 disc.
If the Mac you just purchased is brand new you'll probably find it will only work with the software that came with it.
New hardware usually does not work with older OS disks. Even retail disks are revised throughout the year to reflect the current build, E.G. to allow for updates such as from 10.6.0 to 10.6.1 or 10.6.2 which has just been released.
As a rule of thumb you can use new OS versions on older hardware (to a degree) but you cannot use newer hardware with older OS versions.
I tried selecting the 10.5.6 disk from the startup disk area in system preferences and it still gets stuck at the white apple screen. It doesn't give me the little circle of hash marks below the apple like you would expect to see. It's been budgetted for next year to upgrade the Adobe software to CS4, that's why we're attempting not to upgrade now when we don't have the money planned for it. Since it was last Friday that I attempted to install the Adobe software I'll try again and see if Rosetta still says another installation is running.

The 10.5.6 OS DVD that you have, is it a retail copy or is it one that came with a computer you purchased?
The reason I ask is if you got it with another computer (say, iMac or MacBook), the disc is likely made for intel processors only, which will not work on your G5.
If you can get your hands on another mac, I'd try booting from the disc you have on that mac.
If you can get your hands on another 10.5 install disc, I'd try booting that on your mac to see if it works.
If all else fails, you can always bring it into the Apple Store. The Genius bar will look at it for free and give you a recommendation.
