Question

How to "repair" the dual-boot capability of Bootcamp

Asked by: bleggee

This is a little long, thanks in advance for any help with this:
I have 2 Macbook Pro's. Both have 2 partitions, one for Leopard and one for XP with Bootcamp. I want to copy everything from one Mac (15" Macbook Pro), copy both partitions & OS's & Data, to the other  Macbook pro (is a 17").    This was the easy part .... but
When I am done transferring all the data, The Dual-boot stops working ... specifically, ALL the data is copied over, but  depending on which Util I use to imagecopy-transfer the data, either Windows or Mac will not boot. I boot the Mac holding the Alt/Option key, and only one option will boot (Mac or XP), the other will just freeze on a blank screen.
I did speak with one of the Engineers of the Util I used to copy the data (RDrive-Image) who says that the "Master Boot Record", which lives outside the 2 bootable partitions, is not right and I need to fix it. Makes sense, because the problem does not get fixed, even if I reinstall the OS's from the original system disks afterwards. (He sounds like a PC guy though ... I'm not sure if we call it a MBR in the Mac world)
Soooooooooooo When I go back to Mac run Bootcamp to try and fix the dual-boot Boot record issue, I can re-run Bootcamp, but only if I select to Re-Partition the drive again.
Does anybody have any insight on how I can resolve this?

I am not sure if you will be able to successfully do this. I say this because even though both this computers are from Apple they do not have identical hardware/firmware. The best way to transfer your files/settings might be to install OS X and XP on your 17" Macbook Pro and use the transfer options for both OS X (Migration Assistant) and XP (Files and Settings Transfer Wizard). You will still need to install the applications on the new computer, but once your done with that your desktop experience should be near identical to what you already had.

I hope this information helps. Good luck.

Here is what to do.

First reformat the drive on the new computer. Install OS X from the disks that came with it. It will ask you if you have another computer that you want to transfer data and settings from. Click YES. Connect the the two computers together using a Firewire cable. This will transfer all the stuff on your Mac partition.

Then intstall Boot Camp on the new Mac using the system CD. Then clone the Windows partition using a Windows cloning tool.

Thx both of you for the sugegstions. Any suggestions on a good "Windows Cloning Tool" ?  What you are saying (Strung) is exactly what I did ... but when I used RTT's RDrive-Image.com to make an image of the old C drive and restore just that C partition, that when the dual-booting stopped working. Maybe RDrive Image (or it's User hehe) clobbered something it shouldn;t have. or didn't fully respore somethign that teh Dual-Boot/Bootcamp needed.
I think I'll try your suggestion (Strung) but looking for your (or anyone's) advice on a Windows Clonign tool that works (that is, you don;t have to reinstall the Applications, and it won;'t go outside the partition I am restoring and clobber something)
If all else fails, I'll do Andrews suggestion & reinstall Apps, but trying to avoid that :-)
