Can't download an ios image to my 2801 router via tftp.  I now get an illegal gateway.

I have corrupted 2 2801 routers by trying to load a new ios image into a compact flash on the router. I get a message of "wrong software for this hardware"  When I try to do the rommon upgrade from tftp server as recommended by experts exchange, I get a "Illegal gateway"  I have tried it with and without a gateway on the same subnet as my tftp server.  Also, from the tftp server I can't ping the ip address I set on my router in rommon even tho they are on the same subnet and both interfaces are up. What should I set for the gateway? and will the tftpdnld help me?
