The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Is it normal for FM to take a LONG time to run basic SQL SELECT's?

Asked by angelleye in FileMaker Pro Database

I'm doing some development for a customer that uses FileMaker.  I've run UPDATE commands via ODBC that updated all 52k+ records in roughly 30 seconds.  I've INSERTed records without any problem, and I've run SELECT statements for a seperate business he has using seperate FM files with not nearly as many records in it, and those work great.

Now, I'm trying to run some SELECT statements in this FM file that has roughly 4800 records.  Here is the SQL I'm running:

SELECT Inventory.Ref_Number, Purchase_Order_Items.Condition, Inventory.Qty_Available, Ref_Number.Description, Ref_Number.Manu_Part_Number, Ref_Number.Street, Ref_Number.Weight, Ref_Number.Class, Ref_Number.Hot
FROM Inventory, Purchase_Order_Items, Ref_Number
WHERE Inventory.Qty_Available > 0 AND Ref_Number.Item_Number = Inventory.Ref_Number AND Inventory.PO_Item_Number = Purchase_Order_Items.Control_Number AND Ref_Number.Class = 'ATA Hard Disk Drives'

This takes so long my web page times out before it can display the records.  Only about 90 or so of the 4800 would come back with this SQL.  I tried running it in FM ScriptMaker via the Execute SQL command and that locked up FM and after about 5 min or so I went ahead and crashed it.

Can anybody tell me a reason why FM can't handle relatively simple SQL SELECT's via ODBC?  Even up to version 8 (FM Server Advanced) where I hear all this hype about how it handles web stuff so great?

Any information I can get on how to make this run like any other RDBMS out there would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!!
