Question

Get list of connected users

The Edit/Sharing/FileMaker Network Settings will show me how many users are presently connected to the database, but not who (account name or IP address). How can I find this out ? It would be usefull so that I know who to call to ask them to close their FM program when I need to shutdown a db.

Oops... forgot to mention: running FM Pro 8.5, acting as a host for other FM 8.5 local clients, mix of Windows and MAC.

indeed it would! but you have to it yourself...
what I do:
I have a table which reflects the fmaker accounts, login name, ip address, online or not.
To create an account, I use a script of mine which creates the account in filemaker and in my table at the same time.
when a user logs in, I log its IP address and sets him online.
I also have a script to leave the app which changes the online status to off.
A bit heavy, not 100% reliable if a user crashes his machine or get disconnected (wifi users)...
In the server version, this possibility is provided by the admin utility.

It is provided by FileMaker server, when you shut down a database it pops up a warning if there are connected users.  You can send a custom message to those users, along with a timeout parameter.  So you say "Shutting down this database in 2 minutes, finish what you're doing and exit!".  Pretty nice, really.  Web clients also count as connected users, don't forget.

If you're just running from the client, then lesouef's suggestion is a good one.  You could also have all your navigation buttons and scripts update a "last modified" field in the user table, so you can see the last time a user did anything.

In FM Server, does it show who is connected (name or ip etc) or only how many are connected (like in regular FM 8.5) ?

both. you see clients and their IP and the files opened by them, so you can disconnect selectively if you intend to close only 1 database out of several.

definitely shows username, i think also the IP, and which files they have open
