Question

Drop-Down List Display one value, on select enter another

Asked by: psfollies

(Using FileMaker Pro Avdanced 8.5v2)
I am working on a database that will act as a Purchase Order system.  It has two tables:

1. Accounts
2. Purchases

"Accounts" contains two fields with many records inside:

ACCT #          ACCT DESCRIPTION
08-0001         Groceries
08-0002         Cleaning Supply
08-0003         Misc.

"Purchases" has a lot of fields (Vendor name, address, price, item#, etc.) and one is called "Product Acct".  That field is related to the ACCT# field in the "Accounts" table. I then have a Value List from the "ACCT#" field.  This has allowed me to have a Form Drop-down list that supplies "Product Acct" with the value chosen from the value list.  So the form drop-down currently lists:

08-0001
08-0002
08-0003

My task is to modify this Drop-down so that the drop-down looks like so:

(08-0001) Groceries
(08-0002) Cleaning Supply
(08-0003) Misc.

When a user selects one from the drop, the field on the form should enter the account number ONLY.  So basically this is to make for a more descriptive drop-down for the sake of the user.

I can't figure out how to accomplish this and would appreciate any assistance please.

I was thinking that I could create a third record that is a Calculated Value, but don't know what to use for the calculation to get the formatting I desire.  I could then use that field as the source of the Drop-down list...

Take a look at the creation of the value list.  In that dialog box there is a second panel on the right that allows you to select another fields.  Click the check box that says "Also display values from second field".  This should do exactly what you are trying to do.
