Question

Trouble getting remote access to work from outside local network...???

Asked by: angelleye

I've got a client I'm working with that has a FileMaker Pro file hosted on a Mac computer.  The computers on his network are behind an Airport base station and I'm struggling to get past it for some reason.

I've attached 1 jpg that shows the current networking config on the host machine and another jpg that shows how I added that rule into the Airport's Port Mappings config.

For some reason at this point I still can't view the files when I try and Open Remote from my computer here at my house outside of their network.  Of course, I'm using the public IP that their Airport is getting from his cable modem which I'm simply getting by going to www.whatismyip.com from his host machine.

I've done this on lots of Windows machines and I never have a problem getting past the routers or windows firewall.  I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with this Airport.

I've also ensured that the Network Sharing is enabled on the FileMaker file, of course.

Any information about what I might be doing wrong here would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

does it work if you open the file directly by typing its URL, w/o browsing?
fm uses bonjour for browsing now, so you should open port 5353 on top of 5003.

Prior to posting I had tried opening 5003, 5353, 50003, 50006, and 591 at the same time without any luck.  Then I saw in the FM help file that 5003 is the only listed that needs to be opened for remote sharing so I switched to just that before I posted here.

I just tried fmnet:/ipaddress/filename.fp7 and it won't work either.

yes true 5003 is the only one for working with files, 591 is often used for web publishing, 50003 and 6 is for remote admin.
in the fmnet syntax, you should skip the file extension.
I am not surprised if does not work, are you sure the airport is directly on the public network, nothing in between?

My client says he's got a comcast cable modem that goes into the airport that goes out to all machines.  Seems very similar to most networks I work with and opening ports on routers and software firewalls has always done it for me.  The OS X firewall is disabled and we've opened the ports on the airport as explained so I'm stumped.

try to do a port scan from outside, see if 5003 is really open.
then another test to make is to route the whole traffic in on the fm server, and test if at least 80 can be reached (osX always has an apache built in)

The ports you open are correct. The only one you need is 5003 TCP and UDP.
The settings seem ok.
If you want to access the FileMaker Pro solution I suggest using http://www.logmein.com.

You can create a free account and install an agent on the host computer.
Then at home you can log in to your account and access the system remotely.
I have been using it for years and it works very well.

When you are at the clients office you can try to access the file using another system and using the external IP address. You will need to know the exact name of the file to make it work.

Each mac comes with an application called network utility which contains a port scan. You can type in the external address and scan for port 5003 to check if it is open.

Turns out my clients cable modem had a firewall built into that was blocking the port so even though we opened it up on the Airport it was never reaching the Airport.  Once I knew it was definitely getting blocked by something besides the Airport I had him call his ISP and they gave him his login info for his modem's firewall and I was able to open the port.  Now everything is working.
