Question

Import multiple text files into Filemaker 10

Asked by: bud100

I have a folder of 500+ text files, tab delimited that I need to import into a filemaker table.
These are all formatted exactly the same like:
name  address  city  state  zip

I first tried the import folder (text) feature and was able to get all filenames and paths into a FM Table. I'm sure a loop is the next step but I'm not sure how to accomplish that since I don't see an option in the import script step to select the fieldcontent (filepath) of the current record for import.

Any help would be appreciated.

if you'd import file per file and would like to specify the filename, first define a variable=file path, then specify the variable as the file name in the file import script command, or, easier,
put all files (and only files to import) in a single folder and use import from "folder": that will import all files using the same import matching scheme (can be scripted too)

Use the import folder to define the files paths for each file.  Save this to a temporary table.  Use a script to cycle through each record (filepath) in the table, and import it.  I can post an example if you would like, but I don't have time today.

why would you do this when import from folders does it all?

by: Ag_DudePosted on 2009-09-29 at 08:14:40ID: 25449966

Unless you have found a method I am not familiar with, import from folder will not actually import the files.  It simply locates all of the text files within a folder, and defines a file path for each.

Importing folders imports the contents of the file into one field.  I needed the content parse into thier matching fields in filemaker.

So, unless I missed something, a folder import brought in filename, filepath, and content (3 fields)

If that is accomplishing what you need, excellent!  I use the method I described to import log files from data logging equipment, where I need to combine all of the data in thousands of log files (txt) into a single table.  In my case that table has about 10 fields.

true, since he wants to import tabbed files. import from folder imports the whole content in a single field.
in this case, you can parse this content to generate the records afterwards or use your way (probably quicker).
as far as I am concerned, I would have concatenated the files to import as a single one using
> copy a.txt + b.txt + c.txt + ... + z.txt  thebigone.txt
then imported this last one, much faster than N imports in fm
