Count words before and after comma

What database platform is this?

If there is only ever one comma, you can start by removing the left portion and right portion into individual strings (calculated columns) trimmed of whitespace to left and right; then one easy method is to take length of each string and subtract from it the length of the strings with all the spaces removed.  This would give you the number of spaces and the number of words would be that value +1.

You will have to determine how you want '1 & 2' to calculate.  If this should be one word, then replace ' & ' with '&' before doing anything.

Primary zone - filemaker pro.

I was trying to do this as part of a script without having to add any fields to cut down on the process time in having to split out fields.

Sorry, I saw the FileMaker pro, but thought maybe it ran on something like MS SQL.  It has been a while since I worked with folks using FileMaker Pro.  Not sure on the commands to use in FileMaker which is why I was hoping to get the actual SQL platform behind it -- but guess it is still proprietary -- think it use to be file based.  You can try Request for Attention if you don't get an answer in reasonable amount of time.

Just guessing at the syntax, but figured since you understand it -- can help translate.

yes, there is a Length(expression) function, and replace is Substitute ( text ; searchString ; replaceString )
but why bother counting words this way when there is a wordcount() function?
take into account that wordcount considers dash (-) and punctuation signs as word separators. your method using spaces may also lead to errors where you may have double spaces, or trailing spaces, etc...

@lesouef, I don't know FileMaker Pro, so was just asking.  I agree if there is such a function, it should be used.  I was responding originally thinking this may be FileMaker with MS SQL, MySQL, or Oracle back end.  Just trying to learn, so thanks for confirming.

even when you use a sql backend, commands are the same, sql tables are "seen" as native tables.
you can still use SQL queries upon importing sql data  into a native table, but that's generally a waste of time...

@ lesouef - My issue with wordcount is that it can't stop or start from a designated location (comma). Just count the total wordcount of the string.

you can submit to wordcount an expression which is already an extract from the orginal one, like
wordcount($LeftSide), or even combine them directly, even if it is less readable:
wordcount(Middle ( Strings::Field1 ; 0 ; Position ( Strings::Field1 ; "," ; 0 ; 1 ) - 1 ) )
