You'll find one event, in June 2006, where some of the basics of ODBC and other connectivty are outlined.
Coincidentally, a member of my team - Greg Lane - just did a preconference session on all things ODBC (including External SQL Sources, aka ESS, which was not available in 2006) at the FileMaker Developers' Conference this past summer; he's editing a movie of the same presentation and we expect to host in on our YouTube channel (SkeletonKeySTL) in the next 30 days or so.
