How would I find out if there are any?
How would I find out if they start up automatically?
(This is one area of the the system where I am not an expert, unfortunately.)

Do you have any other Parallels products installed?
Maybe there's a Parallels service running that starts automatically when booting up that might be preventing the installation from happening.
