Hi,
For AVI 3.*: The free Quicktime 3.0 download will open and play the file.
For AVI 4.*: The ~$20-30?? Quicktime 3.0 Pro upgrade will let you open and play the file.
For AVI 5.*: There are no Macintosh codec's to handle this. You wont be able to use Quicktime or any other software to work with this format. You can run VirtualPC or RealPC or some other PC emulator and install the AVI 5.0 codec in Win95 on that emulator but the performance wont be too good (I tried).
For AVI I.263: Same as 5.*
How do you know what format the AVI file is? Use the free Quicktime 3.0 to open the file. If it cant play it, it will say "You wont be able to see the video do you still want to open the file?" Say yes, and then get movie info. Select "video" in the right popup, then in the left popup, select the item that tells you about the video format.
I can resubmit this as an answer if you like.

QuickTime 3, available freely from Apple, has the capability to do this kind of conversion. On the Mac you can use a program such as Sparkle or MoviePlayer 2.5 (the former shareware, the latter included with older versions of QuickTime). I do it all the time. On the PC side...Well, I suggest you write that part of the question in the PC areas of Experts Exchange.
