I don't mind going to InDesign, as long as I can convert the files from Aldus PageMaker 5. Is InDesign for Windows able to open/convert Macintosh Aldus Pagemaker files?
Thank you in advance.

Browse All TopicsHi,
I am looking to change from Aldus PageMaker 5 on the Mac to Adobe PageMaker for Windows. I currently have Adobe PageMaker 6 for Windows but am unable to open/convert the Macintosh files.
What software do I need to buy to convert the files from one platform to the other? Would PageMaker 7 for Mac work?
Cheers,
Mel

It looks like the Mac version has better import/export support. If you can get PM 7 for Mac why not use it instead of 6 for windows?
Okay, here's the bad news - InDesign will only convert from PageMaker 6.5 and 7 format files
http://www.adobe.com/produ
"...It also opens PageMaker 6.5-7.x documents directly so you can convert legacy templates and documents easily..."
On the other hand, contrary to a prior suggestion, it is PageMaker for *Windows* which (unfortunately) has the better import features, as it will convert PageMaker files from as far back back as PM 4 (on the Mac), so it would appear that MP 7 under Windows is the better choice to achieve what you seek to do - convert PM 5 (Mac) files to a current version. I hope this helps you in making your decision.
From Adobe's Pagemaker format spec page.
Adobe PageMaker 7.0 for Mac OS and Windows can import native PageMaker files that were created in PageMaker 4.0 or later for Mac OS and Windows. In addition, you can use the Adobe PageMaker 3.x Converter, which is included with PageMaker 7.0, to convert PageMaker 3.x publications to PageMaker 4.0 publications, which you can then open in PageMaker 7.0. PageMaker 7.0 also supports the import and export formats listed in this document.
You can use the following methods to transfer PageMaker publications across platforms:
- Object Linking and Embedding (OLE)
- The Open command (if you use the same major version of PageMaker on both platforms)
- The Cross-Platform PageMaker converter, to convert publications and templates created in PageMaker 6.0.x and 5.x for Mac OS to PageMaker 7.0 for Windows documents. The converter is available at no charge from Adobe's Web site at www.adobe.com/support/down

First off I cant say I'd recommend pagemaker on any platform. If youre going to switch, go to InDesign.
Can you export from PM 5 to PDF? That could be an option.
