Although OS X does have it's own inbuilt PDF maker the PDF's that are produced are bloated in file size. Adobe Acrobat is a much better tool.
In my experience the main cause of problems is either fonts or embedded images.
Run a Font checking tool (I prefer FontDoctor X) to make sure that your fonts are OK. Secondly, if you have any images make sure they are referenced correctly.

Ignore PDFMaker. Youre on a Mac. It's easier than that. Open the word doc, hit Print. Go to the Output Options section, hit the "Save as file" button, select PDF, and hit Print which will now say "Save".
