The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

QUICKTIME 7 won't play MOV files with sound

Asked by dgrrr in Apple Software

Someone sent me two new MOV files today. I installed Quicktime 7, it played the two MOV files, but VIDEO ONLY.  No sound. HOWEVER, I can see the sound levels jumping in the video window, but hear nothing.

I tried a different MOV file I had on my HD from a different source -- which does have sound on the sender's PC. Same issue.

I tried playing some other files, MPG files, with Quicktime 7, and they play fine - WITH SOUND.

I also tried playing an AVI file with Quicktime but it says I need to download more stuff, so forget that.

I tried playing the MOV files in PowerDVD, Windows Media Player, and Winamp, but no go.

I tried opening the MOV files with virtualdub mpeg2 (which is the only version of virtualdub I can find nowadays). Said it couldn't open it.  LIkewise, some EE Posts on related subjects said try using "GSPOT" to identify needed codecs for MOV Files -- but GSPOT said MOV is an unsupported file type!

Some people on web said this issue (no sound for mov files in QT7) might be caused be various codecs used when recording, or when converting file.

Other people who had similar problems said the MOV files DID have sound with earlier versions of quicktime.

I'm trying to avoid installing a hundred codecs and/or versions of quicktime.

****
So, to recap, my Quicktime 7 won't play sound on MOV files, although the sound level indicators are jumping. But Quicktime 7 DOES play MPG files with sound fine.

Anyone recognize these specific symptoms?
