Browse All TopicsHi everyone....
Just got 3 new imacs e... and i need advice really.
On the PC i used to use Zonealarm... the 3 key reasons were it was free, effective and easy to use.
I need all these 3 in a firewall for the Mac... The main feature i'm looking for, is the ability to get the firewall to ask each time a new or changed program tried to access the internet... and give me the option to completely block all in and out traffic from/to the program...
I have a trial version of NetBarrier, but its not as easy as zonealarm was... and it's not free...
Any suggestions?
1) FREE
2) 2 way customiseable firewall
3) Effective
4) FREE
5) EASY TO USE
6) FREE

OK .. Heres a review of the main OSX Firewall software -

Most say that OSX built-in firewall is more than adequate in terms of protection ,... and is FREE but it is not very configurable by default. In order to add specific rules for ports/protocols or applications you need to get deep into the terminal writing rules .. like explained here
http://www.oreillynet.com/
or use something like Flying Buttress to do it more easily. The program called Brickhouse was changed to Flying Buttress years ago and although you can use it for FREE the creator requests a $25 shareware fee if you like it.

Hello Sturobinson17,
ts/littles nitch/
I am not sure what your exposure is to OSX or Apple Hardware, but OSX being a Unix Variant already comes with a FREE firewall built in and it's pretty easy to use. As for application blocking, or at least giving you the option, I don't believe it does that, but if you are looking for a rock solid solution that is free, it does work.
Now if you absolutely must have live notification, then I only know of one product that will work with the OSX firewall and provide what you are looking for. It's called Little Snitch. It's not free but it does the trick:

I hope this helps.
