Excuse me for asking but what is 'Numbers'?

In excel, one could use the formula (=(a3-a1)) and get answer expressed in minutes provided the cells referenced in the formula were formatted as time (military). It was fairly automatic in Excel, but Numbers won't seem to do it at all. There are 25 different formulas listed for time expressions but none expresslyfor this.
Also, two other funtions we used a lot in Excel were "fill down" command to paste the same formula in an entire column or row with corresponding cell relationships retained down the column.
and: 'Freeze heading' to keep row and column titles visible while scrolling through a large worksheet and visually keep your place. Can't find thoset either, must be a particular search term for it in Apple speak?

In Numbers 2008, I did the following:
In cells A3 and A1 entered: 4:02 PM and 3:53 PM (the same trick works with military times, too)
In cell A4, I entered the formula:
=1440*(A3-A1)
The result was 9, the number of minutes difference between the two times.
Like Excel, Numbers is storing a time as a date/time serial number, with 24 hours being equivalent to 1.0. To get minutes, you multiply by 1440, which is 24*60.

In response to suarabh726: a sample of our date spreadsheet ( in Apple's Numbers) is attached.

bd_good,
I see that you have asked a new question regarding the "Freeze Panes" feature. I looked for it unsuccessfully in Numbers and suspect that it may not exist in the 2008 version. I don't have a copy of 2009 iWork suite, and so couldn't check there.
I'll be monitoring your new question in case somebody else knows--that way we'll both learn.
