Question

Communication error in iChat while Video Chat initiation

Hello experts,

During initiation Video Chat error message pops up
"There was a communication error during your chat".
It's fairly new iMac with software up to date. Firewall is set to allow all incoming connections.

I am not very familiar with Apples...

Are trying to chat between two router firewalls?  

iChat AV has issues with this as I believe it uses random UDP ports and your firewall or desination's firewall may be blocking communications.

I am not talking about the firewall on your computer.

I don't have firewall on one side. On the other there is though. How can I prevent it from blocking the connection?

I have been trying for years and have never got it to work. The only way to probably get it to work is try ask the FW admin to enable UPNP but no sane admin would ever allow this feature to be enabled.

Try this info from Apple, it looks like they fixed it in 10.5 but also, both users may have to be on 10.5. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2282

The firewall on Macs allows all traffic. The only trouble is with a hardware firewall sitting between.
I am not able to modify it. Is there any other way to resolve it?

Unfortunaely, if you cannot modify/manage the hardware FW sitting between the two iChat clients such as it is documented in the URL I have mentioned, I suggest you get Skype for your computers.

There is no other known way around this issue.

I have installed Skype already. The only problem is that it doesnt support video conference. Do you know any app I could use?

Actually skype does support video calls(one to one) http://www.skype.com/allfeatures/videocall/

Otherwise, you may want to consider a service such as Webex http://www.webex.com or Adobe Webconnect http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatconnect/productinfo/features/
