How Do I Move My Itunes Library?

Running iTunes 8.x on Mac OS 10.4.11 and 10.5.6

When I copy my iTunes library to another Firewire drive, I see all my tracks. But when I double click one to play it, I get the message telling me it "cannot be found. Do you want to locate it?"

My iTunes library does NOT have "keep iTunes folder organized" selected - I hate that 'feature".

My main Mac runs iTunes fine, as follows:
1. iTunes folder is on an external Firewire dirve.
2. so is MP3 COLLECTION, a folder with all my music in it
3. an alias to MP3 COLLECTION is in the iTunes Music folder which is inside the iTunes folder.

I backup the folders to another Firewire dirve and open iTunes holding the option key to select my iTunes folder. I see all my tracks fine. They just won't play unless I "locate" them!

The solution to this problem has to be implemented frequently, so it cannot involve hand-rewriting the XML file!
