How do you connect Mac mail (version 3.6) to Windows SBS 2008?

How do you connect Mac mail (version 3.6) to Windows SBS 2008? I have tried the Exchange route and the Imap route. Please help.

The general consensus is that Mac Mail does not play nice with Exchange Server. If you have Office for Mac, use Entourage instead:  http://www.entourage.mvps.org/exchange/

On the other hand, Exchange support will be built in to OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) which will be available as a $29 upgrade from 10.5 in about a month:  http://www.apple.com/macosx/exchange.html , so if you can wait a month and don't have Entourage, that may be the way to go.

I have Mac Mail (v3.5, OS X 10.5.6) connected to an Exchange '07 server through the Exchange option in Mail...  Not sure if my SysAdmin had to relax some of the authentication security on the SBS box, though.  Basically, if you are local, you just have to fill in the Outlook Web Access field in with the IP or hostname of your server.  I remember having some issues with my Mac not picking up the internal DNS, so I just opted to use the mailserver's IP address.

What is your exact issue, though?

i am trying to use the imap option. i have portd 143 and 993 opened in the firewall, and i can view the mailbox, but i cannot send email.

Sending email from Mac Mail is not related to IMAP or Exchange.  (Unlike Outlook when connected to Exchange)  It uses SMTP and usually runs on port 25 (without SSL).  Make sure your Exchange Server is running SMTP, and then see if you can telnet to the server on port 25.  Then set up your email client to authenticate to it.  For my Exchange box, I have to use NTLM authentication.

i can telnet to it. im not great with telnet commands, but i do get the following:

220 smtp.mydomain.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service ready at Thu, 13 Aug 2009 1

Sounds like the service is running on the server, and that you can access it, so can you set up the SMTP settings in Mail and send a test message?
