Question

Uninstalling Mac Safari 4 so that I can install Adobe CS4

Asked by: weikelbob

Hello,

I'm running OSX 10.4.11 on a Mini Mac

I can't figure out how to uninstall Safari 4 so that I can install Adobe CS4 on my mac. There is a blank popup screen when installing Adobe CS4 on a slow mac when you have Safari 4 installed.

If I can downgrade to Safari 3.2.1, then I can install CS4 or at least some of it.

Please assist me,

Thank you!

You can get every older versions of Safari here...

I have the old version, I just can't uninstall Safari 4.

by: strungPosted on 2009-09-10 at 16:59:39ID: 25305730

The Safari 4 .dmg file came with an uninstaller. If you no longer have it, re-download it.

I tried that, where in the .dmg is the uninstaller? I have

Safari4.0.3Tiger.dmg

right here on my desktop.

by: Philip_SparkPosted on 2009-09-10 at 22:10:23ID: 25306813

drag your safari 4 app to the trash.

by: strungPosted on 2009-09-11 at 02:24:37ID: 25307770

If you double click on the installer, you should get the option to uninstall.

I was under the impression its not as simple as simply dragging it to the Trash, take a look at this

or try this

1. Quit all running applications.
2. Repair Permissions.
3. Insert your Mac OS X install/restore disc, navigate to the Optional Installs folder and open the Optional Installs.mpkg file.
4. Check the box to install Safari only and run the installer.
5. When that's done, eject your Mac OS X disc and use Software Update to bring your system current with all updates.
6. Repair Permissions again.

How to Archive & Install:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120

If you have TIGER OS then It is NOT necessary to Archive and Install to get Safari 3 back.

Download Safari 3.1.1 Update from Apple's Download page. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/safari311.html

Quit Safari.
Delete Safari
Delete the receipts file at /Library/Receipts/Safari4.0Tiger.pkg
Empty Trash

Mount Safari 3.1.1.dmg file
Run Safari311UpdPPC.pkg
Perform 'Upgrade'
Restart

All is good with Safari 3."

Go into your /Library/Receipts directory.

Delete the receipt file(s) for Safari.

After doing this, the installer should now recognize that Safari 4 is not installed.

You sould also delete:

- ~/Library/Application\ Support/Safari

- ~/Library/Safari

- ~/Library/Preferences/<anything Safari>

D-Fens,

How do I repair permissions?

And do I need to backup my data?

by: weikelbobPosted on 2009-09-11 at 14:04:29ID: 25313454

I successfully installed Safari 3.1.1 thanks to D-Fens.

Except CS4 is still giving me a blank alert box upon installation.

Can you guys help me research this and help me find out what to do?

I might need Safari 3.2.1, I don't know.

Thanks!

I presume you don't have Safari open when you're running the CS4 installer?

no, should I?

When you say CS4 do you mean just Photoshop or
is it when any other part of the suite opened?

We have the entire CS4 Master Collection Suite trial version, and can't get it to install on my Mini Mac. Before we get any choices about what to install a blank alert box pops up.

I've read on the web that this has to do with Safari 4, but I uninstalled Safari 4 and installed Safari 3 and I still get a blank popup box.

The alert box should just say that my computer is low on Ram and such and that the software might not install with full functionality, etc. but we got it to run on my sister's old laptop so I know it's possible.

Since I solved part of this question - uninstalling Safari 4 - I'll close this even though CS4 is still not installable on my Mini Mac.

I'll open another question about CS4 directly.

Thanks everyone. Sorry for the delay. I've been struggling to resolve this.
