Question

Can I clone a Win95 hard drive and make a Virtual PC out of it?

Asked by: Cam_Man595

I have a Win95 machine that I would like to clone and run on Virtual PC 2007 on an XP machine.  Is this possible and how do I do it?  I would prefer to use free software to make the swap.  The Windows 95 machine does not have any USB ports.  I can remove the hard drive if I have too, but it will require removing the motherboard to get to one of the screws holding the drive in.

You might want to look at VMWare converter for converting a physical machine to a virtual pc. You can get it here:

http://www.vmware.com/download/converter/

You can then use this program to convert it to virtual pc format (or why not just use VMWare Server which is free)

http://vmtoolkit.com/blogs/announcements/archive/2006/11/20/vmdk-to-vhd-converter-available.aspx

I hope this helps. Good luck.

I would Use Acronis Imagig software. You can download it with free trial for 5 PC.s
It requires a bit of research and reading but the resaults are wicked :P

http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/products/snapdeploy/

You will have to Install it first. Then create an Image from your Win 95 machine. Then create a Virtal Machine and Deploy that Image onto it.

You will have to use a special patch which let's you to Deploy image onto different hardware. It's called Universal Deploy.

It is a bit complicated but you'll agree with me if you'll decide to go for it. After you'll get familiar with Acronis you'll never Install an OS in the same conventional  way again. Also if yuo register yourself with them, (FREE) you can just email their support and ask for help or tips on how to use it. In myu case I even asked for few extra trial license keys for my Testing. They gave me 3 extra for free :P

Just say to them that you might be interested in buying and they'll do almost everythign for you :)

:D  Plese have a look. And let me know what you think.

Andrew,
I installed VMware concerter on my XP machine and added the Win95 drive to my existing machine.  When I run the converter and try to clone the Win95 drive, it fails at 98%  I tried this 3 times with the same result.

Mega666,
Your idea sounds like it may work but it sounds more complicated than I need for this task.  Thanks.

Unfortunetly VMWare Converter is only experimental for Windows 95 - so it may not work. Is there an error or a log that may help us determine the issue.
