Question

Reduce Virtual Hard Drive Capacity

Asked by: eeshahidt

Hi - I am using Virtual PC 2007 with a .VHD format virtual hard drive. I want to convert the VHD file into a fixed size instead of dynamically expanding, but the hard drive has a max capacity of 80 GB, which would not fit in my physical drive.

Is there anyway to edit the VHD file so that the max capacity (Drive Size) can be reduced to 20-30 GB, so that I can then convert the dynamic drive into a fixed one.

Note: I do not want to shrink/compact my dynamic VHD file, nor resize my partition, since in either case converting the VHD file to a fixed size would still require me to have 80 GB of free space.

The answer is "no".  The problem you face is exactly the same as though you were imaging a real 80GB HD onto a real 30GB HD.  The partition table still indicates there is this massive amount of space beyond the end of the real (30GB) drive & whichever OS you boot on that HD will attempt to write to that area.  The only method is to resize the partition table with appropriate partition management software down to the size you require.  Once you have that resize complete, there may be another option, but I would still a new fixed-size VHD & image across from your dynamic to your fixed-size.

I was afraid that the answer would be "NO"! Anyway, I have Windows 2008 installed in the VHD and can easily re-size the partition. What can I do after that? If needed, I can possibly get access to some Imaging software or look-up some freeware if possible.

There's a few different methods.  I have used VHD Resizer with success: http://vmtoolkit.com/files/folders/converters/entry87.aspx - naturally you will still need sufficient disc space for both before & after images.  Alternatively, you can add a new fixed-size VHD to the existing VM of the size you need & then image across from one drive to another.  This may be possible via Windows' own disk management (I haven't checked Windows 2008 options) by creating a software-mirrored drive & then breaking the mirror once complete.

I am still working on this and will get back to you soon. Until then, I have slightly raised the points since we are getting somewhere.
