What's wrong with unk extension?

Hi, my customer send a mail and attached an Excel file to 3 person(A,B and C).However, only C received it without any problem. The *.xls file can be opened and displays content.

A and B both received the same mail but the file-icon was replaced to "att-1.unk".Since the View and Launch do not work, they detach it to disk, and then rename to att-1.xls to force Excel to open. But they see garbage displayed inside Excel.

What's the problem here?
Any solution for that?

Question, is the customer using Microsoft Outlook to send mail? Seems like one of the mail servers is renaming the attachment as type: unknown.. and then compressing it.  If the customer is using MS Outlook (2000, I think) and has his mail settings on plain text or Outlook Rich Text, or other attachment restrictions in place, (either locally or on the server), then some or all attachments might be corrupt.

Also, if A,B,C are receiving the file forwarded by customer and the original mail was from Outlook or an exchange server, then the forwarded attachments are garbage to everyone else.

Have customer zip the file, or rename the extension to "new" or "nef" or anything but xls and resend and see if that makes a difference.. of course, A,B, C will still have to detach and save to a file, but can rename it back.. to xls so that they can open it in Excel.

Of course, if customer is not using OUtlook.. nevermind!!

Microsoft info, and a reference to another Lotus Notes technote:

tskelly's notes are accurate, from what I can see, especially the first #17641 that explains how to correct the SMTP error on the Notes 4x server.

Sorry, I should have looked it up.. smile.
