Initial Lotus 6.5 setup

I know kind of weird if you ask me.  I always thought the same way too and thought Domino was the more secure and robust messaging system when compared with Exchange.  Plus more virus emails are targeted towards Exchange/outlook than Domino/notes.  Thanks for the links and I'll keep you updated on the migration process.  How long do you think I can get domino and notes fully up?

In your Domino(server) link I don't see any where I can use for a step-by-step deployment or anything how to install it.

Depending on how far you want to take it, you could get it up and running in about an hour or so.  Just remember that if you want to connect the server live to the internet you'll need to harden it so that no one can use you as an open relay etc.  but that's another question.

Just finished the install and doing the server setup.  Here's a link for points on the Harden part so it won't be used as a open relay.  If  you can post your answer on how-to on that question.  This way you'll get credit for that one too if you can help me out.

I cannot send outgoing mail to exteranl email address, I keep on getting delivery failure.  And when I create new IDs I keep on getting this error:

"Network operations did not complete in a reasonable amount of time; please retry."

So how come I can't create no ids even with my cert.id file?

What's the delivery failure you get?  Did you setup your Global Domain Document?

Are you using the Register new User link in the Admin Client to create the ID's and users?

I couldn't find how to setup the Global Domain Document.

This is the error message:

DELIVERY FAILURE:  No route found to domain yahoo.com from server HAMAPP/HAMFARM
Check Server, Connection and Domain documents in the Domino Directory.


I already fixed the problem on creating IDs which I am able to create now but still cannot send outgoing mail to external email addresses.

Another very important question I may ask.  What ports do I need do port forward so the outside can see my Domino server?

Port 1352 is the "notes" port   (and of course SMTP port 25)

Global Domain Document is under the Admin Client under Configuration tab,  expand Messaging and click on Domains.  If you don't already have a Global Domain Doc, create a new one, this is the document where you specify what your domain name is  Test.com or whatever.

In the same place go to connection documents (Connections under Messaging) and make sure you have one that says :

Connect type is SMTP,  source server is your servers name   (Testserver/OU/Domain) Connect Via: Direct connection
Destination: anyhost   Dest domain   SMTPDomain

SMTP Relay host (IP or FQDN of your relay host if you have one)


Basically without that connection document Domino isn't sure where to send outgoing mail, using this document your telling the server to connect directly to the MX record of the To: domain    Otherwise you can setup a connection with a SMTP Relay Host so that the server will send all outgoing mail to the relay host .

For the connect type, destination :  any host   dest domain smtpdomain.

What do I put there?

For now put smtpdomain in there

Then Create a "Foreign Domain" document (again under domains)

Domain Type: Foreign SMTP Domain
No Restrictions
Routing - Internet Domain = *.*   Should be routed to = SMTPdomain

This should get your internet mail flowing agian.

No the Forein Domain is a seperate document

Your making 3 total documents here.

1 - Global Domain Doc  Under Domains
1 - Forien Domain Doc  Under Domains
1 - Connection Document  Under Connecions for the Server

Global Domain doc holds the settings for your domain   (example.com)
Forien Domain Doc holds settings for routing to the internet (*.*)
Connections Document tells the server how to make the connections (Via SMTP in this case)


Notes has the ability to send mail via different connection methods, like dial-up modem to modem etc.

Here we're telling the server (router) that if is see's a domain that it doesn't recocnize (*.* anything other than example.com) to send the mail out via SMTP using DNS to find the MX record for the domain we're sending too.

If your in the Admin Client you can hit F1 to get the Admin Help Database for the page your viewing.  Search for Mail Routing and see the document titled:  Sample Mail Routing Configurations

alrite,  i got those 3 documents.  i sent out emails with no delivery failure but it's not reaching on their end.

OH,  you want to setup iNotes ?

Well the short version is that the Users mail database has to be created from the "Domino Web Access" mail file template (if you've already created the users you can replace the design with that template).

See the Admin help about setting up iNotes,  also go to www.notes.net  bottom of the page is a link the the Domino 6 forum, search for iNotes setup.  There are some sample webpages you can use in the "sandbox" on that site to get your Logon page up and running.

iNotes setup is going to get pretty in-depth...

but how about my emails never reaching the receiving end?  i dont' get any delivery failures though?

ok, i downloaded the iNotes/Webmail v2.4.  it has a login.nsf.

where do i put this?  and once i replace it with this then everyone who visit, http://mail.hamfarm.net will see this new login?

Check on the Messaging Tab in the Admin client and click on  [Servername] Mailbox (mail.box)

This is the router mail box where all incomming and outgoing mail is stored for dispatch by the router.  Check to see if any of it is hung up in there.  If the OS's DNS is not setup correctly, then the mail will fail and hang in the router mail box "waiting for DNS avaliblity".



For iNotes you'll need to put the logon.nsf file in the domino directory usually ( X:\Domino\Data   or X:\Lotus\Domino\Data)

Then in your server document you would go to Internet Protocols tab and HTTP tab, setup the hostname, and set the Home URL to /login.nsf?OpenDatabase&Login

iNotes setup is really another question though.
