URGENT - Lotus Domino - Exceed maximum folder count in database

We are having a major issue with a Mail db on Domino server that we are unable to open/compact/fixup because of the error "exceed maximum folder count in database".

This is one of our major users and they are currently unable to work.

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? A quick response would be appreciated.

Thanks
Alex

Alex,

It sounds like that Mail DB has exceeded the maximum thresh hold of 1GB that any mail database should reach. What is the size? If this is the case, then you will need to restore the file from a backup or a replica, and instead of compacting it, create a new replica (file-replicate--new replica) and break down the file to get it beneath a gigabyte. Let me know what the size is, or if it is over a gig follow the above steps and let me know what happens.

Yep Bozzie as far as I can tell by all the info I have read up on, it looks like the old backup.....

You literally can't do anything on mail db's with this error. This error has come about because of a job to do with the archive system and I don't think these users have really reached a folder limit. I think the backup is the only way as I can't find a solution anywhere.

Thanks
Alex
Can you open the db using LotusScript?
Did you see the code that lists all views/folders of the db in one of the links I listed in my previous post?

I have not tried. Do you know if anyone has managed to resolve this error using LotusScript or the code you have in your previous post?
Don't know - they didn't "finish the threads".
I mean, even if they did resolve the problem - they haven't posted the confirmation about the solution I'm talking about.

I think that you should try to open the db using LotusScript.
If that goes well you will have the ability to delete some folders using LS.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that would be the end of your problem?

Good luck,
Marko

In theory it should resolve the problem. But I have read threads suggesting that the folder limit may be around 1500 folders. I do not believe the mail db is anywhere near this. So it is possible the archive task has done something odd to the mail db. However if I could delete these phantom folders it should resolve the issue.

I am not so hot on LotusScript, how easy will it be for me to try?

Have you checked if "allow more fields is ticked" is ticked (db advanced properties) ? doesn't really have anything to do with folders but its the only limit i can think of..
Miklesw,
wouldn't then the message be something like: "Database has too many unique field names"?

It's not that.
Well Exlayer?
I'm here only for the following 20 minutes.

Then from the 9AM CET.
yeah it would.. but it doesn't hurt to check..

Sorry I didn't reply to this sooner.

I could not use the script method because the mail db's had already been removed from the Domino system because they were causing the Domino Server to PANIC on a regular basis.

I have since used one your scripts on a local backup and the folder counts are 2717 and 2671. I do not know what the folder count limit of Notes/Domino 6 is. Does anyone?
Well, when someone starts his subject with word URGENT you don't expect of him to wait for 8 days before posting again!?!?

Grrr

mbonaci, you are of course right. I suppose I put URGENT in the hope that someone might come back with an immediate fix so that I did not have to do a mail restore straight away.

Unfortunately in this company I cannot get away with the mail system or users being down for any length of time. So I had to get round it another way.

I should have really replied sooner though, sorry....

I suppose the issue now is not mail recovery but error prevention.

Got any ideas on what the folder limit is in Domino/Notes 6?
In R5, it was around 256 folders maximum.  In R6, I think there's no limit (in  theory)

cheers,

Tom
And Exlayer,
I've posted the fix immediately - we could delete some folders using LScript (you say the script worked, you've received the mail message listing the folders?).

Bozzie, as you say I have found no reference to a folder limit, however these 2 db's with 2650+ folders keep returning the 'Exceeded maximum folder count' error. So for the error line to exist there must be a limit somewhere.

mobonaci, unfortunately I had already removed the mail db's from the Domino System because of the PANIC's. I could not see how to run the code against the db in this situation.

I did however use your code with a small mod to discover the folders in the mail db, but this was on a local copy before the 'Exceeded Maximum Folder Count' message begun occuring.
Did you already contact Lotus support ?  They may have a solution.
