Page cannot be displayed in Hotmail and Yahoo mail

Sometime in the last 3 weeks the following issue began to occur on a LAN that my company supports. There are apx 10 PCs on a domain with DSL access to the Internet.

Prolems with Yahoo mail - I can get into the inbox, but I cannot compose a new email when logged into the server. get message "Page cannot be displayed".

Problems with Hotmail - I can get to the login page, but I cannot login "Page cannot be displayed".

All the browsers are IE version 6.0.2800.1106, 128 bit, with SP1

I have done the following things...
Brought in a laptop from home and connected to the LAN switch - I can acces both Hotmail and Yahoo successfully. The laptop was not added to the domain. This seems to rule out the company hardware firewall. PCs do not have personal firewalls.

I checked for a group policy. ONly one is the default domain policy, cannot find anything that would affect Yahoo or Hotmail

I then modified security settings on the PC browsers to low security. Still failed, The page cannot be displayed.

On a PC, downloaded Netscape 7.1 and installed
Tested web sites, still have the same issue even with Netscape
I can go to www.hotmail.com but not open a mailbox.
Therefore, the problem is not IE

Checked virus definitions, up to date. No viruses.

Deleted cookies, temporary Internet files

I do not know for sure if any Windows updates have been applied in the past 3 weeks, but they are generally up to date within at least 3-4 weeks.

Unfortunately, there is another website that the company needs to access in order to submit insurance claims, and it is behaving similarly.

Does anyone have any additional suggestions?

delete temp internet files and cookies

a) IE .. go to tools --> Internet options --> advanced and scroll down to security and enable SSL

Check SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0

b) Donot set your security settings too high.. Check this

I do not believe this is an IE problem because I have the same problem with Netscape Nav

There are no personal firewalls
U have to clean both IE and netscape or any other browser u are using.

This if for IE.
===========
How to Delete the Contents of the Temporary Internet Files Folder
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=260897

 1. Empty the History and cache folders used by Internet Explorer. To do so, follow these steps:

a) Click Options on the View menu in Internet Explorer.
b) Click the Navigation tab, click Clear History in the History area, and then click
Yes in the dialog box that appears.
c) Click the Advanced tab, click Settings in the Temporary Internet Files area,
click Empty Folder, and then click Yes in the dialog box that appears.
d) After performing these steps, check to see if the issue has been resolved.
If it has not been resolved, continue with step 2.
--------------
also goto IE->tools->internet options
and clear all temp files and cache files
restart IE and then try again.
=====

same kind of cleaning u have to do for netscape also clean all the temp files in netscape and all the cache files/cookies and all.
and then try again.
===========

also doing everything above try this flush dns too.
ipconfig /flushdns
and restart your browser and try again.
I cleared temp files, history, and cookies, restarted browser.
Ran ipconfig /flushdns
Same problem

The netscape was a fresh installation, so there was no history, etc. I had installed it to see if the issue was specifically related to IE. I found that with a brand new installation of NetScape, the issue was the same.

There are just certain webpages that have problems. For example, I can get to www.hotmail.com just fine. I can follow all of the links I tried just fine. It is only when I try to go into my mailbox. my mailbox works fine from PCs outside of this LAN.

This problem seemed to start around the same time we implemented terminal services and added a Cisco router. However, I have tried stopping terminal services and testing, same result.

I also brought my laptop in from home and connected from inside the LAN (going through the Cisco). I can open my Hotmail from my home laptop when going through the Cisco.
could u try these.

1. also what is security level in IE and netscape.
if it is high try to make it medium or low and see if u could see the site.

2. For Windows XP locate a file named HOSTS in the following folder:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

what is the output please post it here. and keep it minimal.
Hi billwoolsey, Could you post a copy of your HijackThis log here.

http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html

What operating system are you running?
To Shivsa

As I mentioned initially, I set the security to low to test, still had the same results.

We are not using any hosts files, we are using DNS.

To acsell

There are 2 W2K servers (both DCs), there are several W2K Pro desktops, and a couple of WXP laptops.

What is the purpose of the Hijack This logs? I have never used it, but it appears to detect when your homepage has been hijacked.

Hi, billwoolsey. It was because the HijackThis log also shows entries in the hosts file which can redirect you away from certain websites.

also try-

IE Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>Edit> type in

hotmail.com
msn.com
passport.com
passport.net
yahoo.com

and Allow All Cookies for each in turn.

tried this, no luck
IE Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>Edit> type in

hotmail.com
msn.com
passport.com
passport.net
yahoo.com

and Allow All Cookies for each in turn.

Hosts file is default (no new entries)
I ran the hijack This, the only things in the log are legitimate applications. The server consoles are never used for browsing anyway, so hijck of the servers and each PC on the LAN is doubtful

I will go through the other links you sent.
could you bring that laptop back in and add it to the domain, then try it again.  You had stated that you didn't add it to the domain.

This was resolved by a coworker using the following 3 steps (all were required)

Step 1 - modify mtu in router (that part had been done previously but had not solved the issue)
Step 2 - change the mtu at each PC using the Dr. TCP utility
Step 3 - add the registry key to add mtu size at each PC

Here is the Cisco doc giving details

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/794/router_mtu.html
WOW!  I'd have to say I have never seen mtu settings affect computers like that!  I have had a lot of work with mtu and that's a first for me.  Great job!  Glad you got the problem resolved!

Mark
It is truly odd because we have another site with same Internet provider, Cisco router, and same operating systems. We did not have to do any of the above at that site. Very wierd.
Great trick we all laert.
glad u got it working.
Just wanted to thank you both for helping on this issue.  I've been searching forever to figure out why I couldn't access these sites.   I set my router (NETGEAR) to an MTU of 1492 and my problem has been solved.  This was without altering anything on my PC.  Thank you all!!!
Wow, thank you, I never would have found that MTU issue without the help of this thread!
I have problems with getting into 1 yahoo game in particular, I try to access literati and it always says page cannot be displayed when using IE 6.0 w/ SP 1 but if I go into netscape I can access it just fine,
I have cleared history, cache, temp files and all that still it will not work ,
I know from past experience in POGO that I had to rename a host file, but I cannot remember what file it was, So I just tried to rename the Local Host to Local Host 1, that still did not work ,   I don't know what this mtu settings  are.  never heard of them so really I don't want to mess with that, I can access other yahoo games just not this one. Any one have any ideas

Thanks
Bobbi
You could try loading Firefox (from Mozilla)  -  I am having some issues with IE and Hotmail and RealPlayer.
I loaded Firefox to determine whether it was browser related, and Hotmail opened fine & dandy.
I want to fix the IE issue though, as it is clients preferred browser - plus it is annoying me that it worked before :)
