Outlook 2000 Address book

Hi,
Can anyone tell me where I can find the Outlook 2000 address book?
I had to reload Windows 98 (I just renamed the old Windows)and I was hoping to recover the Address book for Outlook.

Look for a file with a PST extension. (holds contacts, mail, calendar, .etc)  You also might want to look for a file with a PAB extension if you had upgraded from Outlook 97/98 or had a Personal Address Book in Outlook 2K.

File location for Win9x is usually:
\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

For WinNT 4.0:
\WINNT\<PROFILE>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

For Win2K:
\Document & Settings\<Profile>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Adjust where necessary for you O/S language.

Thanks Neo mvps,
I'll give that a try when I get home (I am at work at the moment).

Thanks again,
Noelpear.
Outlook 2000 has abandoned the personal address book in favor of the contacts database.  This was to eliminate the confusion and headaches associated with having two sources.

If the addresses that you are looking for were held in an Outlook 2000 config, you will need to create a profile to open the PST that you were using and export them and then log into the current profile and import.  You may also be able to associate the PST file with the current profile and simply move the data to your active contacts list.

Hope this helps..

PS.. if you were using 98 previously, the personal addresses are likely still in the PAB.. There is an import option for this as well in 2000.
Might also need to add Outlook Address Book as a service (in corporate/workgroup mode) and/or right click on your contacts folder, go to properties->outlook address book tab and check the box to display folder as an address book.

Any of the above not being done will prevent your contacts folder from displaying in your address book.
Noelpear:  From all the suggestions you received, did you get your problem resolved?
Hi everybody,
Thanks for your replies.
This is the situation:

Neo mvps -
I have tried to reinstate the .PST file from the original directory but without any success.

Temlock -
I created a new profile but I was unable to import the .PST file for some reason. It seems that I can't get anything to recognise my original .PST file for some reason.

Traval -
I tried to execute your suggestion but the option to display folder as an address book is "greyed out".

I'm beginning to think that I should just cut my losses and start from scratch!!!

Thanks for all your help, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Let's get a few more details on this before cutting bait.

First, what version of Windows are you running on?

Within Outlook under Help->About Microsoft Outlook it will say either "Corporate or Workgroup", "Internet Mail Only", or "No Email" at the top underneath Outlook 2000.  Which does yours say?

Next, you cannot open the PST file or import it into another PST file.  Why?  What error messages or results do you actually see?

Please include verbatim any error messages you are getting.  Click details if such a button appears on any error message.

What is the name, size, location, and last modification date of the PST file your are trying to import or open?  Does the data seem consistent with your previous installation of Outlook?

Unfortunately there are other programs that use the extension PST so we need to verify it is actually an Outlook Personal Storage (PST) file.

What are the entire results from searching your drive for *.PST and *.PAB?
Hi everybody,
It appears that I have found the problem, I moved the original .pst file to the new;
C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
folder but I could still not access it. I noticed that when I reloaded Outlook it created an outlook.pst file (the file I copied was called mailbox.pst).
I renamed outlook.pst to something different and then renamed mailbox.pst to outlook.pst and VOILA!!

My problem now is who do I allocate the points to. You all helped me in different ways. Is it unethical to ask your opinions?

Thanks everyone.
no one.. you figured that out on your own from what I can tell..
