Outlook / Outlook Express and EML files!

350Mhz
64Mb RAM
Win98
Outlook 97
Outlook express 4.72

Having dragged & dropped e-mails from outlook express to a different folder to back up, they are saved as ".eml" files.  However neither Outlook nor outlook express seems to have the capabilities to import or view these type of files.
Anyone with any ideas?  Is there a halfway programme or am i missing something

thanks

If you double click an eml file, outlook express should automatically open and you should be able to read the email. Then choose file, copy to folder, and the option to save to inbox and other folders appears. You can create folders there and then to store your old emails.

Good luck!
You can drag the eml files back into Outlook Express.  Then you can export them to Outlook.

Double clicking them brings up the "open with" dialogue box
and so far, neither outlook or outlook express seem to work!
And... Surely there is a quicker way or restoring 1500 old e-mails than one by one click and save, after all, the programme didn't mind dragging them all out simultaneously, why not drag them back in simultaneously?!

And...

When dragging the files back into outlook express, the programme opens a new message and puts them as an attachment.  Did you try it yourself? If so why does it work differently for me?
But thanks and keep trying!!!
oops, should say please!
Well, it worked for me when I opened an eml file as my system recognises it. And YES you should say please and keep the cynical response to a minimum if you need require help. In the future, help might not be so forthcoming.
I am able to drag and drop the *.eml files back into OE without any problems. Try double clicking on one of them again and when the Open With box appears associate the file With OE. Make sure the box "Always use this program..." is checked. Perhaps doing this may cure the problem.

Did you drag and drop the files into a specific folder inside of OE?

The Crazy One
Maybe you need to upgrade OE. I am no sure OE 4 does what you want.
Outlook Express 5.5 and 6 allow you to drag the eml files right back into whatever folder you want.

Its a free upgrade if you're interested.  Just upgrade to IE 5.5.

??cynical response??  I can't see one!  I was posing a serious question, one I believe has probably been answered by CrazyOne & rjcpjc

I will be back in a week or so, The major difficulty is that it is my parents machine and I live in Manchester, they live in London and trying to talk them through anything on the phone is a nightmare.

I will take my IE6 disc with me when i go and attempt to install OE6 or whatever build it has.

If it works, Which i strongly suspect it will, what with OE4 being the problem, Everyone will be getting points for your useful help.

p.s. CrazyOne
I can't remember where i was dropping them i suspect just into the inbox!  I'll get back to y'all if i have further problems.
Failing that, it's points as follows
If comments work...
Original answer from jassav - 150 - useful but long winded
Original answer from rjcpjc - 100, Follow up with qualification to make it useful (OE build spec) - 50
(total 150)
Answers from CrazyOne - 200 - for hilighting real source of problem (OE4) and providing links for updates which is most useful

If anyone has quibbles or thinks that's unfair, i will be interested to hear your opinions but they are unlikely to change my decision.

Thanks to all three of you for your help, please be patient for a week until i get back to Mum and Dad's again to try out the fixes!

thanks again

Alex
