.PST Password Recovery

I am looking for a way to recover a PST files password.  I have a PST file that somehow got a password set, and no one knows what it is.

I have tried the pst19upg.exe program.  The program converts the pst file to a .psx file, but is unable to convert it back to a pst file.  Here is the error I get:

Failed importing PROPERTY 36E41102 (scode: 80040600)

Failed importing PROPERTY LIST

Failed importing FOLDER 0x00000122

Program terminated in error (80040600)

I am looking for a (free preferably!) program that will remove or recover the password, or a way aroung the error I am getting in pst19upg.exe.

Thanks for any help!

You'r right, I don't think there should be a password set on it.  I actually was just setting up Outlook with this PST file and doing some other things at the same time.   I didn't enter a password.  And I believe I would have had to enter the same one 2x in order to set the password.  Maybe the file is corrupt.  Also, the read-only isn't set.

If this was just a setup issue, and there isn't any data to worry about in the PST file, just go to the MAIL applet on your control panel, remove the existing PST file and add a new one.  Then restart Outlook.
The PST file is one that was used previously with a lot of mail in it already.  I was attempting to reconfigure outlook to use this PST file, which usually goes fine without problems, but this time it didn't.  I am looking into some data recovery services right now, if that's what the company wants to do...

Thanks a lot for your help, traval!
I realize that it has been awhile since you had this problem, but I am running into the exact same issue. I wanted to throw another quirk into the mix. I not only get the error message when trying to convert the password protected PST file back from a PSX, but I get it when I try to convert a perfectly good PST file back from a PSX. I'm using Outlook 97 and the PST files are stored on a Novell network. We aren't running exchange.
I forgot I even had this question out here!

But, I don't have a solution for you, cblakeley, sorry!

My boss knew someone or something that got the password recovered.  I'm not sure how it happened, but it worked.

I found a lot of comments from people who got errors using pst19upg.exe... I don't think it work a lot of the time.
There is a utility produced by microsoft called Pst2gb.exe.  It is designed to repair pst files that hit the 2GB limit.  Outlook 97 will let you keep adding to your pst file untill it reaches 2GB in size.  Once a pst file reaches the 2GB file size, it automatically becomes corrupt.  From that point on, you can no longer open it or add to it.  Outlook 2000 and above prevents the file from reaching the 2GB limit and will just give you an error when trying to add items to the pst file.  You can still read from it though.  If you use the Pst2gb.exe file to recover from a corruption, the file will have to be at least 1900000000 bytes in file size.  Also, you can try using the Inbox Repair Tool aka scanpst.exe if the file is under this file size.  Also there are ways to hack the pst file.  The pst file is like a database in that it keeps "track" of where items are located in this massive file.  There is a way to delete the index portion of the pst file in a hex editor and have outlook rewrite the index, but you will have to look that on up on the net.

This problem happens often where I work, so I have compiled a few tools to cope with the problem.  If you need further help, please let me know

Hi MPCT,

It looks like you are new here, so welcome.

That said, this thread is closed, and it's not good ettiquite to post to closed threads.  Everyone involved in the thread gets email saying a comment has been added with a link to the post, and then has to waste time checking out what is up with that thread.

Additionally, tebacher says that the issue their is resolved, and cblakeley (who shouldn't be posting their problems in someone elses post in the first place) says that their problem is trying to remove a password from a PST file using the pst19upg.exe utility and it getting errors.  So I am not sure where you are going with the 2gb limit on PST files.

Please don't take this as a dogpile on the new guy, I'm not mad or offended, I just wanted to give you a heads up on SOP around here.  And again, welcome, it's a great site.
