OL 2003 Hyperlink action

Recently upgraded to OL 2003, annoyingly every hyperlink (like my EE notifs) open a new IE window, and this is a bit annoying (I currently have 35 IE windows open after clearing my notifs)

normally I would just open IE >tools>internet options>advanced
and under Navigation, check reuse windows to launch shortcuts

But its allready checked? so Im guessing there's something in OL2003 that needs to be checked, as Im feeling particularly lazy, what is it :)

Its allready selected Ash :( bah and I thought you'd nailed that one

Pete
PeteLong,

Will nail it ...LOL (hope so)
tried firefox - no change

tried filetypes HTTP - settings are correct

tried default email and internet settings they are correct
I think SR's info should also have helped you.  Thanks, SR for pointing me here.  Willing to help, want no points.

After modifying IE setting, it's critical to close IE for the setting to take, then reIPL (reopen), did you do this?

Also, if persisting, clear your cache and autocomplete items.

Check www.officeupdate.com for relevant updates.

If problem persists, what is your OS and IE version?

Asta

Indiscrimite opening of windows, if all the above show to be handled, may imply intrusions, another whole issue.
petelong,,

why dont u close all windows , restart the machine or log off ur account and then check  how it goes .
Restarted Everythin and rebooted :(

tried reset web settings to default no change :(

OL 2003 v 11.5608.5606
IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpSP2

Good point on the SP - I think SP1 is out for Office 2003 I'll go get it :)

Thanks asta XXX
Have Office XP, tried to recreate the problem; can't.  All updates current and running XP SP2.
Which version of XP?

In IE - how are you configures in terms of IE - tools - internet options - general - settings?  I changed mine to "each visit to the page"  kinda ho hum, but works for me.
XP Pro SP2

just changed to "each visit to the page"  will retest :)
Family day, but happy to help if I can... will return when time permits.  Did have "some" problems, but mind fuzzy (no sleep) so can't remember the issues now... LOL.  Perhaps tomorrow.
For me , I have choose NEVER in that area were each visit to the page is set.. still works fine for OL2002...
Pete, do you need some links on XP SP2?  I've got gobs in terms of roadblocks and fixes, given the problems I've surpassed (gotten over)..  Just yell.

Clear cahe, autocomplete and all the standard stuff.  Behaviors have a way of misbehaving.  LOL.
About to dookl... back tomorrow if all is well.
cook (injured rotor cup), can't type.  LOL
>>Behaviors have a way of misbehaving.  LOL.

office 2003 SP1 didnt help :( unticked reuse windows then reticked it no change

its like banging my head against a wall bah
Wild thought

could it be something quirky with the way left mouse button behaves clicking on it , instead of open, it is opening in a new browser ??

I made these in my OL 2002

a) Made it default email client going to outlook , going to tools --> internet options --> programs inside IE and right-clicking start button , properties --> customize under start menu
b) previously had OE as default hence removed it
PeteLong,

There should be a way to confirm that option of reusing shortcuts actually works..
may be importing your OL emails into OE and then checking from there....

Thought XP sp2 was out, need to check in the AM.

Baffling, what all is running concurrently?

Checked virus intrusions with updated definition files (heuristic) and all?  I know you know this stuff; tried again to recreate problem on 2 systems with XP SP2, can't.

Blown.
Which application are you using when you click the hyperlinks which opens these windows?

Sometimes (who knows why) ... multiple reboots work magic.
Since firefox and IE are both behaving the same way , it may not be wrong with the browsers..

Pete, you may want to create a new profile in OL , set the email account , send urself an email and check how that behavior is
In case it was viral removed Mcafee 6 and installed Sophos enterprise, no change - removed and installed Mcafee 8 updated it no change

default EMail program is set to outlook not OE

no other applications open except background apps
YIM
Zone ALarm
Gmail notifiyer
McAfee AV

have rebooted about 8 times now (why so many reboots to install mcafee! and I had to drop the firewall that dont fill me with confidence) - LOL

still the problem persists?
Have seen that ZoneAlalrm and XP2 in conflictd (injures shoulder and can't type);;;;  tried uninstlling;updateing:
zone alarm is updated

also set
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Value Name: AllowWindowReuse to 1 still no change

bah!

just checked with M$ update - all up to date, still at least that means my SUS server is working LOL
This is too weird...

Here's a shot in the dark, but worth a try...

Go back to IE - change default Email program to Outlook Express.  Close IE .... reboot.  Back to IE - change default email program to Outlook .... close IE.  Assuming all the settings you want are set, this "may" work.  Then try again.
If problem still persists, check the Windows file association for the URL:Mailto file type
Do you have the Navigation Pane turned on?  Maybe this troubleshooter helps.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP010399281033.aspx?Product=out2003

Running out of ideas, LOL
>>Go back to IE - change default Email program to Outlook Express.  Close IE .... reboot.  Back to IE - change default email program to Outlook .... close IE.  Assuming all the settings you want are set, this "may" work.  Then try again.

did that OE open them properley (in the same window)

rebooted changed back to OL 2003 and it dont work

trying the next two.............
with navigation pane on or off no change :( .......................................
URL Mail to is set to

action : open
application used to perform action : "C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE" -c IPM.Note /m "%1"
use DDE is ticked
DDE Message: <blank>
application: outlook
DDE application not running: <blank>
topic: system

Hmmmm  if the dialog below appears, clear the DDE option; more below.
The Locate Link Browser dialog box appears when you open a Web link in an e-mail message in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;821692&Product=out2003
Well, Pete, one final thought and that is to close all IE windows first and be sure you're not trying to open alink from an existing folder/Links interface.... but again, can't get this same behavior here.  WHAA.
When you click an Internet shortcut on the Links toolbar, the Web page may open in a different Internet Explorer session, even if you have selected the Reuse Windows for Launching Shortcuts setting on the Advanced tab in the Internet Options dialog box. When this occurs, the shortcut may open in the first browser window that you opened.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;241047&Product=ie
So again and again we are proving to ourselves that there is no problem with IE as I see OE is behaving properly ..

Pete, have you tried to create another dummy profile in OL and see how the reaction is ..  It might be silly for me to think that there could be profile corruption as you say everything has been installed new , but could be a worth try..

morning guys - I'll follow up on these answers tonight :)
turned off DDE - no change

the second KB goes on about updates - and Im up to date, then loops back the registry key I checked above :(

Im going to create another profile hang on
Will be watching...
bah - its a microsoft conspiricy!!

I set up a complete new OL profile and that dont work - arse!
hang on Ill create a new user account in case its my user profile.....................
WHAA!
nope even a completely new user account on the same machine it does the same! hurrumph! Im flat out of ideas guys :(
In my attempts, as an aside, though not directly related (methinks) .... found some downside results using Hotmail Plus (pay for it) hyperlinks to access EE Qs, and inconsistently get it opening many windows (all new); then getting javascript errors on the bottom.  See any of this?  My workaround and fix was to cut/paste the link from the Hotmail message into the address bar, after clearing cache and did a full Viruscan check (McAfee with updated virus definitions files) and AdAware SE Pro, all updates and heuritic scan as well as Spybot S&D with updates and running immunize all.  Found some amazing new intrusions which I should have been guarded against.... Go figure.

WHAAAAA
This, having added Pop3 Hotmail to my Outlook XP account and "trying" to replicate the problem.  Strange results, to say the least.  All Office-related apps updated from www.officeupdate.com; and XP at SP2 levels.  No corruptions or ID probs.  Very intriguiging.
Do you still have prior versions of Office installed?????  Also had some downside when I chose to maintain the old Office 2K elements for Publisher and a few others; and found they don't coexist well.
Yeah its a pop account but works fine on OLXP and 2000 perhaps I just gotta put up with it, as I quite like OL2003 otherwise?
>>Do you still have prior versions of Office installed?????

No, I got enthusiastic with a screwdriver and stripped some capacitors of my old motherboard, after a swap out, the thing ran like a dog so I did a fresh build of XP and office 2003 its a shiny new system
pete..

busy at work. will think of some other ideas....
Spiffy!!, though don't want to resort to this myself to get my functions back; too many legacy things I need for my creative side.

BUT if you're in recovery mode and happy, this lady says YAY!!!!  BAck soon, deadlines up the wazooooo
Pete, I know you're not gonna give up and be complacent.... we can fix this, though time's tough for me now.

YELLLLLLL and I'll pop back when I can.

Not gonna let this thing beat us, right?

":0) Asta
>>Pete, I know you're not gonna give up and be complacent....

ah you know me Faaar to well asta - dont break a leg, on it its just an annoyance, I'm going offline for a bit I'll put some fresh eyes on the problem later :)
Petel

Is there any other machine you can install OL 2003 and do the testing..

I just donot have OL 2003 to check if there is any setting whatsoever but I know Asta has got OL 2003 and it doesnot behave that way for her..

I do find that there is a lack of logic at times, but don't have specific URLs that I can cite for the problem, like EE.  Once in a blue moon, clicking Outlook links will open in a new window; will keep and eye on this and view the source code for those sites to see if they use the window:open thingie or the like.

Have you tried the Office Repair, just in case?

OOh, also had one other glitch, in case you hit it too.
Troubleshoot e-mail linking in Business Contact Manager
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP011264131033.aspx
I turned off automatic e-mail linking but my mail is being linked anyway.

If, in the Link E-mail Automatically dialog box, you selected Clear All to turn off automatic e-mail linking, you need to turn off the automatic e-mail linking each time you create a new folder.
On the Business Tools menu, point to Link E-mail and then click Auto Linking.
In the Link E-mail Automatically dialog box, click Clear All.
Click OK.
---------Mmmm tried it on the PC I have at work and it behaves the same (new windows all over) it would seem its caused by this version of OL2003

Office 2003 Enterprise (VL edition)
Aha, different from mine...  RMS as one example ...  will explore a bit more when I can; recovering slowly from an injury.

Still no joy, this thread is getting a bit long eh :)
Drat, sorry; yes quite long.  Ask for a refund/PAQ and reopen to get current attention and point to this, no?  Will check the link.  Have a separation in my AC Joint (OUCH).  Typing and researching in all my free time, LOL, with one arm isn't working out too well ....
Sent this link to a top expert in Office and hope he can shed some light.  I can't help it's a piece of the port settings issues and/or the pop up blocking that we can circumvent, but still befuddled.  Back again when the mind focus is a bit better.  Hopefully bruntj can shed some light.

Pete, did you email slink about this ?

Pete, you're not alone with this problem, if it's any consolation....

Think it would help to post in the Office/Outlook 2003 Newgroup forum at MS?

Thanks, Brad.  Well, lo and behold, the problem finally surfaced and I hate it.  What I did, because I just don't have time this month to pursue anything (and still healing); I uninstalled Office 2003 after saving all my settings pst, phonebook and so on and reinstalled Office XP 2002 and got all the updates.  Talk about a runaway from issues, that's where I'm at today.  Not plagued with that now.  Bad me.

Hope we find a solution, maybe in the user group.

Asta
Cheers Brad

Nice to see some great experts from all over the site in the same place for a change LOL - Only need Slink and Dreamboat to turn up and I can bugger off and come back when its fixed ROFL
Sent a note to Dreamboat, hope she comes here.  ":0)  Asta
It would seem that its a recoginised problem :( and one that Im going to have to put up with for the present.
Many thanks to everyone who spent time trying to help especially Ashwin and Asta.

I'll close this one out, if anyone stumbles across a fix in the future please drop me an EMail and I'll repost to increase the PAQ value - Im going to spain for a week tommorow so Ill be off the grid for a while.

Pete
Thanks, Pete.  Have a great time in Spain!

Been researching further; amazed at how little I can find on this roadblock.  But did find this very interesting as I read through it; had I followed these processes to allow the older version to be uninstalled, the behaviors "may" have been more to liking.  Still will explore further.

Use the Custom Installation Wizard to make changes to the default Microsoft® Office 2003 configuration. The wizard reads the package (MSI file) and records the modifications in a transform (MST file). When you run Setup with the transform, Windows Installer applies the transform to the designated package, and Setup installs the customized configuration.
Source for more:  http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003/ref/refa04.htm

Have  a wonderful time , Pete
:)I used to be an old hand at transform files, another idea stolen from Novell (a bit like directory services, remote control, group policy, logon scripts and organisational units)

I'll be around today and tommorow moring trying to get some points (first time in 18 months ive not been in the top 25 :( Im slacking
hahaha.. petel. you got to work hard then..
Curious, Pete, if you have set Word as your default html editor within Outlook and impacts the hyperlink behavior; that was my situation.  Will look for more, but re. the Word 2003 Editor and functions, pretty informative.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP052428501033.aspx

In further exploring hyperlinks and Word 2003, found a switch which I wonder is something we can find in the configs as cause?
\n  Causes the destination site (link) to be opened in a new window.

Wonder if this would help ..... go to Folder Options - check .htm and .html details and see if you've got them configured to open in same window.
checkin...............
MMMMMmmmmmmmm curious

HTML

action = &Open
app used to perform = "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" %1
use DDE = ticked
DDE Message = "%1",,-1,0,,,,
application = IExplore
DDE app not running = *
Topic = WWW_OpenURLNewWindow      <---WHATS THIS!

The problem, methinks.
WOW, nothing like that exists in my folder/file type options in XP SP2....  When I choose either of them, next window choose advanced I see this.
Here's mine - equal for htm and html ext.
edit
open
print
open in same window
printto

I also have IE set as default for handling .htm and html ext.
select "open" then click edit

my options are the same as yours exept Ive got "Edit with Dreamweaver MX" as well but that wasnt installed when the problem started so I cant blame that
Im 99.99% sure my associations and IE settings are spot on, is only a problem with outlook
OK; but it's the way Outlook handles the .htm* hyperlinks and opens in new window.  All settings you've tried still keep this behavior. So much for logic, when you said " Topic = WWW_OpenURLNewWindow      <---WHATS THIS!" ..... though we nailed the culprit.  WHAA.  It's a real mind-boggler.  Fooey!
:) it was sent to test me
Pete,
I changed to Firefox as my default browser earlier this week and noticed that the the EE notification letter no longer spawns a new window. Firefox is also palpably faster. And supposedly avoids most of the securitly issues that plague Internet Explorer.
Brad
Hey Brad  - Ive tried Firefox in the past, perhaps its about time I gave it another shot, thanks for coming back here for a heads up :)

Have a great new year

best wishes

Pete
