Re-install of MS Office 2003 and config Outlook 2003 with a BACKED UP .pst file

I'm running Outlook 2003 in my MS Office 2003 install on Win XP Pro. I have a SONY laptop PCG-K23 512mb RAM. I recently re-installed everything due to excessive disk errors on the original 60gb drive. I re-installed Win XP Pro, SONY necessary software and drivers, re-installed Office 2003 and restored my e-mail database. Everything is working fine, but....

I guess I am unsure as to when to restore the .pst file. I have ended up with two(2) personal folders showing up in my email Folder List. I see an icon for each in the Folder List and each appears to have the same information. One icon looks like a bunch of folders and the other icon looks like the "standard" Outlook icon. This is the second time it has happened to me. What would the correct series of events be in a reinstall and configuration of Outlook 2003 when restoring an existing .pst file? I have been unable to find this on the web to this point.

Thanks in advance, Bill

Hi bill_cote,

What I normally do, is installing a new (empty) Outlook, and replace the fresh generated pst with the old one.

What procedure do you use to replace the fresh generated pst with the old one?

Hi millerdog,

What I normally do is:

Rename the old profile from USERID to USERID20060405
So it is saved as a kind of backup, and all your pst-files are saved in the old profile.

Rename
C:\Documents and Settings\USERID
to
C:\Documents and Settings\USERID20060405 (date of today)

Now login to create the new profile, install Outlook for that new profile and then copy all pst-files from

C:\Documents and Settings\USERID20060405\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook (I can't check that for the moment, but you can always do a file-find *.pst).
to
C:\Documents and Settings\USERID\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
