"document already open" error message
When I open a Word or Excel document (by either double-click.. or even right click and selecting 'OPEN') I get an error message that reads:
"A document with the name 'xxx.doc' is already open. You cannot open two documents with the same name......." In fact, the document IS NOT open. This does not happen if I open the document from within the program. Sometimes, the program will not let me save as the same name... and insists that I rename the document... what a pain in the ***.
I am guessing some register is improperly set - but I don't really know enough to fix it.
thanks! Paula

As I work through these steps.. I find 11 files in my Windows/Temp directory with very long numerical names, whose filetype is: FILESET file. Can I delete these? They vary in size from 100KB to 8MB
thanks!! p
thanks!! p
yes you can delete them, the trouble with files in that directory is tehy slow down the rest of the programs(office) when they roam for temporary files in that directory and all of them are pieces of read files in office applications, setups or files you downloaded read form the net

Ok... I cleaned up those temp files, then rebooted. Opened an excel file. Made a change, saved the file. Closed properly (using File/Exit)
Then tried to open the SAME FILE from within a folder -- and same message. THANKS for trying tho!

:) thanks for the grade and glad it helped .... we got some PAQ here with many possible things to try but it think the regserver helped
not sure but this could be caused by improper closing of the documents
if this is on a local disk then try
-close word/excel
-then delete all temp files in the temp directory on your disk
-a reboot of the machine
-then open a document in word/excel
-close it
-open again as you would like to open
-any better?
