The pain of SKU011.cab
I read the prior posts on this, but still am having issues ...

I have looked through the CDs and can not find a SKU011.cab file on any of them ...
Neither can the Updater either ...

I have looked a the D:\MSCache Folder ... even put it in the root directory as one post suggested.
It has a SKU011.xml file ... but it does not work ...

I have not found a way to update Office anywhere ... what in the world is this file and why is it not
on the installation disks ...

I have searched all over the net and have not found the file ... the links are always bad ...

when searching for it in the cd, choose to find hidden files. the file is there on the root of the cd.

Would the reason the file is not there is that they are the backup CDs  I was given by the IT Manager ?

There is no sku011.cab in the root of this CD hidden or not ...

The link above added another cab file from the Front Page CD ... my Front Page 2002 updated fine with
SP3 earlier today ...

at the MS newsgroups has been written the following:
"It's possible that your LocalCache files are corrupt or missing. The quick solution would be to uninstall and reinstall Office (remember to keep the local cache after setup by selecting the last check box to not delete installation files). This isn't the most convenient solution, but will give you a fresh start.
This is a very difficult issue to debug and fix, as you can see from this blog from a MS setup developer:

so I'd recommend the above.

More info on the Local Cache (also known as LIS, Local Install Source) and its benefits to patching

When I try to upgrade from the web I get the following mesage:

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer. This may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the Office Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.
You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more information see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source if Unavailable.


       Search for Office updates in the Download Catalog

       Report the error to Microsoft


I have admin rights
No network problem
The .Msp files are there (I think)
I have Windows XP so I should have Installer Version 2.0

I guess my recommendation is to reinstall Office, and then try the updates. If unable to uninstall run a repair installation.

the files mentioned include probably the SKU011.cab and others. It must be a problem with the local cache install, and I guess you can only solve it by reinstallation.

I tried to do the Detect and Repair and that is when the first need for sku011.cab came in ...

Yes  it does, I have it in my installation cd's, though in a different language than english..

the why, well, that's behyond my knowledge..

Nevertheless, can you uninstall it?

I have not tried to uninstall since I just don't have anymore time to spend on it today ...

I am sure I can ...

I have a combination of Office installed as well ... I hope the uninstall does not affect both

   I have Office XP (2002) for the Front Page ... it is up-to-date with SP3 ( I do not have any other 2002 app installed)
   This is located in the Office10 Folder

   I have Office XP Professional (2003) for all other applications including Access, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher
   This is located in the Office11 Folder

They all work, but every once in a while I get a crash and they suggest to update program. This is what started my quest
for sku011.cab.

It is also funny that when I select the  "Check for Updates" in the Help Menu of each Program ... nothing happens. It does
nothing.

Detect and Repair also asks for sku011.cab as well.

If you uninstall Office 2003 only you probably won't run into any complications. I just asked because even the uninstall process may be unavailable, due to those files being gone. if so , check back here

I have purchased a new computer with Office Professional 2003 and got the OEM Disks ... I have looked at them as well and there IS NOT
a sku011.cab file on any disk, hidden or not ...

There was a xml file and a 010.cab ... what is the deal ? Is the 011 file only on retail versions of the CDs ?

I updated my system without the sku011.cab file but my desktop stills asks for the file that simply does not exist on any CD I have
reviewed ...

This is becoming very annoying ... Does anyone have a solution ?

that is very wierd indeed... have u tried removing all office installations from the computer and installing?

for AEII it didn't work, but u can try to use office update first, and then uninstall. Sometimes it works.

I can't find sku011.cab on my install CD either. I repaired the install from Add/Remove programs and it now works.

I have spent the most part of today fixing this problem ...

I have found the sku011.cab file on some of my client's system ... and not on some ... in fact my new laptop with the OEM Install does not have it.

I tried copying the file from another system and placed it in the MSOCache directory as so many posts have said and it still didn't work ...
the update then asked for A2561405.cab ... which was also nowhere to find ... not on my other system either ...

I then tried to uninstall and it also would not ... I had to install another copy of Office 2003 just to get the right files in the MSOCache to allow me to
uninstall one of the two Office 2003 Installations ... but make sure to make a copy of the MSOCache folder before uninstalling otherwise when you try
to uninstall the second one .. it won't either because of files which were deleted from the other uninstall ... won't allow it.

The reason for the second install was required because it would not update to SP1 either ....

I then ran Registry First Aid to get rid of bad entries ....

After all that and several reboots ... I reinstalled Office 2003 ...

The MSOCache Directory does not have either of the before needed cab files, but it updated with SP1 fine without asking even for a CD ...
Of course when I tried to activate ... it wouldn't allow it since it had already been activated before so I had to call Microsoft and get a new key ...

I have no idea why both my new laptop and workstation do not have the files that were so needed before ....

I also love spending so much time "bonding" with my computers which make me so productive ....

Hi there,

I had this problem just with Microsoft Word, asking me to put the SKU011.cab in E:\.

The mentioned file was not in c:\msoCache.

After I started Word the installation asked for the CD. After I put the CD in place the missing files where copied to c:\MSOCahce. After that I did not see problem accur anymore.

The big issue I think is if you have a retail version of the CD or an OEM ... The OEM seems to do this much different ...

I have found the file and placed it in the msoCache directory before and it still didn't help ... it begins to ask for other files then ...

If you drop a msoCache complete directory from another machine on the system it seems to just delete the SKU011.cab file upon
opening or upgrading ...

The only solution I have found to work is to uninstall everything involving Office and reinstall and then call Microsoft for an activation
code (since it already has been activated) ...

I also see the problem more if the user has had previous versions of Office either before or still in the file structure ...

In any event ... this is a pain to deal with ...

I was able to beat this time ...

The system asks for a specific file ... I have the MSOCache backed up and just created a folder on desktop and begin dropping the needed files one at a time
when the system asks for it ... I did it with the three first files it asked for, then just dropped all of them ... it did ask for one more that was there that it deletes for some reason and then it worked !!!!
