convert wps to word 2003

I have some wps documents that I'm not sure what version they are. They are from 1999 to present. I no longer use Microsoft Works and need to open them using Word 2003. Is there an easy way to do it?

Hi KevinGen,
PeteLong is correct. Word 2003 has the ability to open files created in Works 3.0, 4.0, 6.0, 7.0 and 2000. There is a Files of type dropdown in the File...Open menu item that gives you access to the file converters.

If you still have Works installed on a computer, then you can find out its version by launching it and using the Help...About Microsoft Works menu item.

Cheers!

Actually...  Word *2003* does not do this.

The question was about 2003, the solution refers only to 2000.

I am struggling with this same issue right now and cannot find anything.

2003 will open Works 6.0 and above, but not back to 4.x.

Arg.
haleen,
In my Word 2003 File...Open menu, I can change the "Files of type" field to Works 3.0, 4.0, 6.0 & 7.0 and 2000.

It is possible that I installed extra file converters during my Office installation. If so, you can use the Add/Remove Programs control panel to install the other file converters.

byundt...

Oh how I wish I had what you have.  I looked under add/remove and the only text converters listed were the ones already installed.  Works 7.0 being the lowest numbered in the installer, although 6.0 is available in the "files of type" list, so there is a disconnect somewhere.

This is Office "basic" 2003 under XP Home, so maybe it's bundled in one of the higher end packages.

I'll dig out the Office CD (still shrink wrapped, this is a factory set up Dell)

I couldn't find anything about this on the MS site and they seemed to imply it was not available (I'd have to go back and re-find it to cite).

Thanks.

FYI I've got about 600 files needed conversion.
halleen,
I've got Office 97, 2000, 2002 and 2003 all installed on my computer--so it is possible that the text converters come from one of those. The Office 2003 package is the Standard edition.

Add/Remove Program control panel lists the following:
Office 97--couldn't check
Office 2000--Works 4.0
Office 2002--Works 4.0 & 2000
Office 2003--Works 7
Works 7.0--probably accounts for the rest of the converters

I too need information on this topic. I'm always receiving files in *.wps with no version information. I run Office 2000 and all the file convertors are installed and so sometimes I can open the files and sometimes not. I'm assuming that the ones I cannot open are in Work 4.0+, but theres not way to be certain.

So if we are running Office 2000 is the only solution to upgrade our version?
I've used the Macintosh version of ConversionsPlus for years, and have found it to do an excellent job of translating files where I don't have the application that created them. http://www.dataviz.com/products/conversionsplus/cpw_translist.html   It's $70, and should be available at stores offering a good selection of software.

My Compaq came with Works 7.0, which is able to open Works 3.0, 4.x, 7.0 and 2000 documents. It's also able to export in "Word 97-2002 & 6.0/95 -RTF (*.doc)" file format. Copies of this package should be inexpensive because it came bundled on so many computers.

Hey Brad!  I've used that program too for years!  Love it!
A "word" of advice: Keep a copy of "Word 2002" (Office XP) on a spare in your org.
This handles at least up to 4.5...
