When I open a document, Word tells me it is already being used, "Do I want to make a copy?"

Hi all,
Using Office '97 on Windows XP Home.

Whenever I open a .doc either through Explorer or Word/open file, a msg pops up telling me "The document is already in use by c:\ path...\user (user being the name of the profile), do you want to make a copy?" If I say "yes" then I have a copy as well but if I click "Cancel", the file opens normally and I carry on working.
I tried renaming the profile from "User" to "Glenn", restarted the PC and tried again with the same results. All the files give the same results and none of them are Read Only or protected etc etc.
All Windows updates are applied, antivirus up to date and no spyware present. It is only an annoyance as everything else is running perfectly so I'm stumped as to what is going on :-(

Any help is very much appreciated.........Cheers

It appears that for some reason the temporary files that are automatically created by Word are not being deleted.  I will do more research on this... but IMHO - I think that's what's going on.

Hi JOrzech...thanks for the reply. That could be so as when I create a new file, no probs but when I close Word and try to reopen that same file I get the msg. Does Word'97 also create that temp file?

BTW what is IMHO?

It sounds as if Word is not closing down properly. Are there any winword entries in Task Manager?
lol, IMHO is in my humble opinion
Hi GS...no. When 1st boot up in Taskmanager no Winword until d/click on .doc file or .xls same :-(
IMHO ( ;-) I think an upgrade might fix it. MS don't support Oficce '97 anymore of course.
Thanks...........

Hmmmm thanks JO...... seems I have an SP laying around somewhere. Never thought to apply it as after checking at MSUpdate who don't support it, put it out of my mind.
