Windows Media Encoder error "Invalid or corrupt data encountered" when converting avi to wmv

This behaviour it's related normally to audio, not video encoding. Because of the limitations of wme, be sure that the encoded bitrate of result is not greater than the original bitrate.

I just tried it without audio, and it has the same problem. I then tried it with audio only and not video, and it works fine. So I figure the problem lies in the video conversion. I'm new to digital video, so I don't know much about codecs, fps, etc...

open the file in virtualdub.  

run an error check from the menu.

OK, I got it to work, but I don't know how yet. I stopped trying to use WME and started trying to convert with River Past Video Cleaner. I never got that to work either; it kept complaining about audio and DX. In the process of trying to solve that, I reinstalled DirectX 9.0b, and installed FFDShow and Windows Media Format Runtime (I don't know whether I already had that). Nothing could fix River Past Video Cleaner, so I went back to WME, and surprise, it worked. That always irks me, when something gets fixed without me understanding how. Anyone know what fixed it?

But now I have another problem: The .WMV that WME creates, plays on my Pocket PC 2002, but without audio, but it plays on my PC with audio. I am using WME9 with the WMV V8 video codec and WMA 9 audio codec. I suspect that WMA9 isn't supported in WMP8 for Pocket PC, but WME9 gives me no choice. What can I do to get the video to play with audio on the PPC?

And should I still DL virtualdub and check my source?

All right, I solved both problems now!

On another computer, I installed WME9 and the Xvid codec (oh, I forgot to mention that this AVI is encoded with Xvid). WME wouldn't convert. Then I just installed FFDShow (what that really is I don't know), and then it would convert just fine. So I figure that FFDShow was neccesary.

Then to get the WMV to play on my Pocket PC... I searched all over the web, and finally found something that said I had to use the "Voice quality" setting for audio and WMV V8 for video. And then everything worked fine.

Why does video have to be so complicated?

Because there are a lot of standards and different implementation of the same standard. And this is only the begining. :-) Since the mpeg4 project has been launched, the situation is far away from any common standard, so the standalone player's costs is much higher than the standalone dvd players. This is because the mpeg1 and 2 is already standardized. I guess the mpeg 4 standards will be imposed by the big entertainment companies, and not by software producers.
