Word/Excel request virus scan. How turn off?

Anytime that I open a new document in Word or Excel, they "request a virus scan".  This takes several seconds and is a pain in the arse -- it requests a virus scan when I start a new (blank) document!

Anyone know how to turn this off???

Thks,
Laird

not sure which version you're using but the Office apps aren't doing the scanning, Norton Antivirus is and it's hooked in fairly solid into Office [2000]

you could try the steps in the 'Resolution' section of this article will disable it, but you may want to visit the Norton site for their recommendations.

Thanks Bruintje, I know NAV is doing the scanning but MSOffice is requesting it.  There MUST be a trigger to turn that feature off...?  I appreciate your comment, though.

Pete, that menu does have a note that "Virus scanner(s) installed" but there is no option to turn off virus scanning.  On the Security Level tab, I set the security level to LOW and saved (OK) then quit Excel and restarted. Excel still requested a virus scan when I opened Excel into a new (blank) document.

I now suspect the fix will be a registry hack, but thanks for the ideas guys.

Start Norton AntiVirus. To do this, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Norton AntiVirus, and then click Norton AntiVirus 2002.

Click Options (in Norton SystemWorks 2002, click Options, and then click Norton Antivirus).

Under Other, click Miscellaneous.

Under How to keep Microsoft Office documents protected, click to clear the Enable Office Plug-in check box, and then click OK.

Restart the computer.

It works...  Thanks all
