I am running NT 4.0 Advanced Server (yes i know its old) IE 4.0.  I updated my IE to 6.0 and tried to run the WIndows Update but I get this error:

Does anyone know what's the cause and how to remidy?

Are you using a pop-up stopping programs. If so then this may be the cause

Try this

Control Panel > Interntet Obtions
Click on the "Advanced" tab.
Select "Disable script debugging".

Greetings, ststst!
IE 6 does not work well with Windows 95, and not with Windows. Uninstall IE6 and download IE5.5.

From Control Panel select Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down to Microsoft Internet Explorer and highlight it. Click on the Add/Remove button. When the IE Tools menu comes up, select Retore the previous Windows configuration. Click OK.

Download IE5.5 from here. It said for Windows ME, Windows NT can use it.

Ummm I just remembered MS isn't supplying Windows Udates for NT 4.0

Go here
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp

Next click on "Find Microsoft Windows updates"

And I don't see NT 4 listed

Hi-

Sorry not sure how to answer each individual so response below is listed to all 3 who has commented:

CrazyOne - THe Disable Script debugging was already selected

WAR1 - I removed and tried to install 5.5 but only the preinstall loads.  When the actual IE 5.5 install process starts, i get the error lost connection, try later and the update never finishes.  I have installed 5.01 but i still get the original error : pure virtual function call.  I have tried to find the 5.5 from my Technet CD's or even from the Office CD's but no luck.  Any other suggestions?

CrazyOne - actually, i was trying going to install the patch for the worm thing on the NT and thought i should download any other critical stuff that mightve been available. - That's all.

THanks guys!!

No, here are a couple of sites for downloading IE5.5, but the download takes a long time

http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/win95/msiexpl.html
http://www.webzila.com/downloads/downloadscript/pafiledb.php?action=category&id=2

If you just want to download Windows NT updates, there are none. Then Blaster worm affects Windows 2000 and Windows XP, not Windows NT. Miscroft has stopped provided support for Windows NT.

Ummm warren MS is supplying a patch for the NT 4.0 server family. Because there are a lot NT 4.0 severs still in use and they have become a big source for spreading the worm. I was also told by another Expert that the patch can be applied to NT 4.0 workstations even though that patch says it is just for the servers.

War1 - I am downloading as i type - 76% done.

I will install but i'm not sure if it will fix my error but since there are no other updates why try?  It might effect other stuff if i needed to download.  i'll see.

CrazyOne - yes there was the patch for 4.0 and i have applied it.  maybe that's all i have to worry about today.

Hi war1.

I was able to install IE5.5 but i still had the virtual error.  Now when my antivirus started scanning, the error came up.  I think i'll uninstall IE back to original and then test each version.  I'd rather have my antivirus running right now vs any chance of future 4.0 updates (of which i doubt but for only special patches).

THanks.

I have windows 2000 pro and what I did you solve this problem was went to internet options and advanced tab and Disable script debugging was already selected so i removed check mark and closed it out and went back in and reselected it now everything works properly
