asked on

converter *.MOV -> *.MPEG

Anyone know of a BASIC, SIMPLE freeware converter for MOV -> MPEG?

I've tried TMPG, but the output file size is approximately 50 times the input size, for some reason.  This is not acceptable

casiocarcharger,

Check this site

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/

Looks like quicktime 6 and Adobe premier can also do .

That's because TMPGEnc installs default to compress raw. You need to select a
compression codec.

ASKER

tmpg does not seem to have option for MOV.  I was using RAD video tools instead.

quicktime 6 is the PRO version, not freeware

sbsim, spiderfix:
thanks for your help... I will try your proposed solutions soon and then award/split points.

Spiderfix:
By the way, I was wrong about having used TMPG... it was RAD tools that gave me the "bloated" converted
AVI file.  I did not see any option in TMPG that accepted MOV file
look at  www.winmpg.com  might help
Here is what I've got:

TMPG (after installation of mov plugin) does convert, but my 18 Meg file took
over one hour to convert, and the output size was 55 MB ( I used the DIVX
codec)

Winmpg does not even work (joansfella, sorry, spiderfix already suggested it
in earlier post, can't split points)
>>18 Meg file took over one hour to convert, and the output size was 55 MB<<

a) An *.avi is going to compress better than an *.mpg

b) A codec selection isn't the only dictating factor on a final file size. Frame rate (bit rates), frame size,
audio compression settings, layering, aspect ratios, color corrections...there's a multitude of
"adjustments" to compression video sequences. Not to mention codec manipulations themselves.

Not to take anything away from your video abilities but it takes powerful software and a lot of experience
to create quality video sequences. Trial, error, and if your lucky you can get tutoring from someone who
knows video deeply. Keep at it.
try mov2avi.exe at:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/4942/svcd.html
however is is command line based, a GUI however is available at:
http://guiguy.wminds.com/downloads/mov2avigui/

hope this helps
Bink and Smacker (I don't make this up) at http://www.radgametools.com/ has a tool that converts MOV files. Works great.

Sunray 2003 said it, I think the best way is to use Quicktime itself, use " File >> Export " for this, of course you can use anything like " TMPGEnc with qtreader Plugin " too let's see what else I can find!
check out www.doom9.org for all your video needs, i love that site!
Here is a guide about mov to mpeg converter:
