DVD Decoder software

Where can I download a good, free, DVD decoder? I have a Creative 16x DVD - ROM drive.  This is one of those combi things that can also play and burn CDs, so the DVD part is a bonus for me. Unfortunately the shop didn't provide the DVD software / decoder for it.

Please, only answer this question if you know that the software is good and spyware free. it's easy to seacrh the internet using keyword and finds dozens of sites offering free DVD software, but I need expert advice.

Points will be awarded to the first person whose suggestion works.

Thanks in advance.

This one isn't free, but I still think it's the best program around => http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/products/product_main.jsp?ProdId=28

ASKER

Hi LucF

Thanks - good to be aware of it. But it's not cheap!

J
that's right It's not cheap, but you really get what you've paid for. But you can always use windows media player to watch your movies if you want it free.

Glad I could help.

Media Player 9 fo XP does not seem to include the DVD decoder, it is advertised as a buy in
If no other software you have includes the MPEG-2 codec, take a look here:

This comment may be a few days late but I hope it is still useful to someone.

This is the link to a program that's called VideoLAN Client or vlc for short. I discovered it a couple of weeks ago. It will play pretty much any audio/video file available even if the file is not complete or is missing parts. It also plays VCDs and DVDs and is available for many OS's. And that's just the start.

I'd highly recommend BlazeDVD--I've had decoder problems and this plays what others can't!

i found VideoLAN to work well and it's free.  Not a lot of bells and whistles, but it plays a movie.

Zoom is a pretty good free media player app that plays many file types, and can be found at www.dvdrhelp.com .....oh yeah, its free as well.  <removed per http:help.jsp#hi100>

It is a media player which also plays DVD. It is perfectly legal and free. It is also open source and there is no spyware, adware or any other crap.
