Symantec 8.1 Corporate realtime failed

I've seen fixes on the Symantec website for 7.5 and 7.6, but I am not sure what to do about this error with 8.1.  I don't want to mess with the registry if I'm not sure since this is a server I'm getting the error on (NT4 Server).  The exact error comes up whenever I try to enable real time protection (which is also a service, so it appears when the server boots up, as well): "Symantec Antivirus Realtime Protection failed to load. [OK]"  Antivirus was working fine on this PC until I made a Microsoft Transaction Server config change and rebooted, resulting in this error ever since :-(

Any clue???  I'll likely uninstall and reinstall this evening when the server is not in use....

Realtime Protection failed to load

Solution 2690
Problem:

After installing Norton AntiVirus 7.x, an exclamation point overlays
the system tray shield for Norton AntiVirus and a message indicating
that Real Time protection has failed to load.

Solution:

1. Uninstall Norton AntiVirus and any other antivirus programs that
   are on your PC
2. Uninstall LiveUpdate
3. Update the Microsoft MDAC and DCOM components, if you have not
   already done so. See:

   http://help.ncsu.edu/services/getsoln.pl?id=2677

4. Restart your computer
5. Download the latest NAV unmanaged client from:

      http://www.ncsu.edu/it/antivirus/files/Nav76.exe

6. Download the latest virus definition files from:

      http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-NAVCE.html

7. Install NAV 7.61 CE
8. Install the virus definition update file, by opening the file that
   has the name format of:

      mmddx86.exe

where mm = month in numeric format & dd = date in numeric format

I have checked that Symantec artical, and others.  Like I said, that help doc is for 7.6 and I'm not sure the same registry changes apply.  Also, as I mentioned, I will likely uninstall and reinistall (I hate that...).
Hi RockOfVictory,

it is same for 7.6 and 8.1, this issue has been seen many times and has one common source of problem.
in my comment i have outlined the steps to uninstall and install please follow thoese and see if it solve the issue.
good luck.
It's actually a red circle with a slash through it over the shield, not a yellow exclamation.  Don't know if that makes a difference.  I believe I've had to do this before on this server - know of any way to avoid it?

Thanks a lot for your help.  I have to go through all that stuff - MDAC, etc. to get it to work?  A simple uninstall/reinstall won't do the job?  I will try reinistalling with the above instructions later tonight and will rate you guys if it works!!!

Check your even log for errors regarding this issue, and post it here.
Before the reboot when it started coming up with the Symantec real time error, I was told by a vendor (since their software wasn't working properly) to stop and start Microsoft Transaction Processor (MTP).  During the MTP errors, I had gotten a lot of System Log, Event 10010, source DCOM errors on the server from any user who tried to access the network software located on this server from their client: "The server {A8978071-D519-11D1-85DE-000086171CEC} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. "
OR
"The server {CBD759F3-76AA-11CF-BE3A-00AA00A2FA25} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. "

That's the only event I see that looks remotely suspicious.  Here is a link to a jpg of the Application log: www.zepfanman.com/temp/nortonevnt.jpg

There are too many to put the actual text in and the .evt file is over 5mb.

I've posted it on the temp folder of my website: http://zepfanman.com/temp
Beware that I'm trying to figure out the best way to manage increased traffic to my site, so I might have to remove some of these larger files (820KB) if my traffic gets too close to the monthly limit.  By the way, in case anyone feels like responding real quick - know of any good free/cheap services for reviewing my website and consulting with me to figure out the best way to improve my website (add my own php blog, best video/audio/graphics optimization, etc.)?
That was quick :) Thank you

Daniel
thanks for posting that batch file. That came in handy for me. Really appreciate it.
You bet, y'all.  Hey, does e-e automatically put links in my posts?  Or can people create links out of my message?  Am I the only one who sees links out of the "consulting" and "php" text in my previous post?
Pardon my premature post.  I notice that they are advertising links - pretty impressive, if not a little annoying ;-)
Looks like this issue was finally addressed on the Symantec website right about the time I requested help from them over the phone!  I'm not sure if this will fix the problem without having to uninstall/reinstall, but here ya go:

Your post were a huge help Rock.  Thanks!  I was up until 1:30 in the morning having spent three hours last night on this headache.  The nonav.bat cleaned up the whole mess in minutes.  I hadn't read all the way down to try out Symantec command line approach.  Whatever.  My home verserion of SystemWorks/NAV had expired and it was yammering at me for more money.  It turns out my company's SAV 8.1 license allows employees to use SAV at home on their home machine.  I like free.
Rock you are the man.  I just spent an 8 hour day messin with this.  Your solution took 5 minutes.  From now on, I won't  reinvent the wheel.

Thank a ton for your post
Hello,

I have seen this message many times and I always end up installing norton Antivirus client (other than corporate) and that seems to fix the problem---Just to save time.

Thanks alot RockOfVictory. Your solutions rocks...

Just a note to say that this fix also works with V.9 Corporate Edition (client installs of course)

Thank you for posting the .bat file on the site.  Very very handy!
