Norton Internet Security 2005 installation problems

Hi

Before I start, I have read this Symantec document on the subject:

Document ID:2004101409143536

I downloaded NIS 2005. I had NIS 2002 instaled and uninstalled this. However, NAV 2003 was still on the machine. The installation did an AV check, then under the heading of NAV, said that it was removing duplicate files. 100% CPU use for 3 hours got me no further, so I abandoned the installation.

I rebooted, NAV2003 was gone, but NIS 2005 installation disappeared after the first install screen.

Looked at Symantec KB. Removed NIS8 temporary folders and anything else I could find to remove in the temp directory.

Tried again-nothing. Remove NIS8 files, reboot-same story.

Now, Symantec say that I should rename the Symantec reg entry to symantecold-but what about Norton Utilities and Ghost? Not to mention the Live Update entries that caused the kernel error a few months ago.

Is there 1 entry I can remove from the registry without removing all the Norton components, to get this installation going.

As a post script-wow! without NAV and NIS, my PC boots up far quicker and is faster. maybe I should write off this software and get a decent Firewall/AV. Any suggestions?

ASKER

There are no entries left for NAV¨¨I am thinking of Zone Alarm Pro for firewall and Bitdefender for AV, any comments?

Not bad options at all, IMHO.

Zee
>> Bitdefender for AV
i think that AVG is more stable if you dont have any personal likes\experiences for Bitdefender! :)
Well, installed bitdefender-immediately found 2 trojan dowloaders NAV missed!
Well, it goes from bad to worse-

Got this BSOD KMODE_EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED Address 804E723B Base at 80400000 Date Stamp 4173335 NTOSKRNL.EXE

Now, I thought at first this was because of a kernal stack size problem that I had with Norton Live Update 2.5. This was fixed by putting a registry entry in the NAV start up registry entry. After removing NAV, but having live update, I removed live update. Still this problem, anout 10-15 minutes into a session. I suspect the Zone Alarm.

I have some choices it seems: Restore the system state before I tried to install NIS 2005. What about the uniinstalled NAV and NIS 2003?

Or I can delete Zone Alarm.

I am increasing the points, because I need to get on. Anyone please solve my dilemma?

ntoskrnl.exe is a critical process in the boot-up cycle of your computer although should never appear in WinTasks whilst under normal circumstances Note: ntoskrnl.exe can be altered by the w32.bolzano and variants. If this process appears in WinTasks, please update your virus definations immediatly.

Strange, just installed Bitdefender. Don't understand that at all!

Start by uninstalling Zone Alarm.

This will be a trial and error troubleshooter.

Another suggestion I found:

This issue can also be resolved on computers running Windows 2000 or Windows XP by running chkdsk /r in the recovery console.

Information about the chkdsk command
http://www.computerhope.com/chkdskh.htm#03

Zee
Well, it was not zone alarm

Blue Zee, what do you mean by 'recovery console'?
steve... at present what softwares are present on your system ??

Norton
Bitdefender
Zone Alarm

all three..... two of them, one of them..... and which one(s) ??
and do you get the BSOD while in safemode...... ??

What version of Windows are you running?
ok Blue Zee, I do not have a windows 2K CD, so I cannot boot in the recovery console mode

To confirm this is, or maybe isn't, related to the latest software you installed, I would suggest to uninstall and check.

But I fear this is not related to the software, but probably Windows.

Zee
cospiracy theory-but related to uninstalling Symantec stuff no doubt!

Can anyone tell me what happens if I restore the system sate from yesterday? Will it get me back to where I was despite uninstalling NAV and NIS?
the files and data which you have removed by uninstalling Norton...... or which you have added by installing other softwares..... will remain intact...... system restore will resotre all the old registries only...... whether the program is uninstalled or installed...... system restore deals with the registry..... not with the data!

SS

System Restore is not Registry Restore...

I'm unsure how it works in Windows 2000, but if it is SYSTEM Restore it will revert your system EXACTLY to the state of the date you restore it to.

Zee
wait a minute....... who said its Win2000....... win2000 has no System Restore..... only WinXP\ME has this feature...... :-?

and im sure that if you have deleted something from the hard drive...... system restore cannot restore it back..... after the uninstallation..... program folders are gone...... system restore will not restore them back.
Well, I used the Back uo facility to save system state files only-about 250mb. If I restore this, I get the registry settings back, probably without the uninstalled NIS and NAV.

If I uninstall Bitdefender and then restore the sytem, then use RemoveNAV and the RemoveNIS from Symanetec, I might be able to install NIS 2005 - anyone agree?
At worst, I have a Ghost image from the end of December. I would only worry about losing the e-mails. However, I guess that I could back up the Outlook.pst and then replace the existing one if I do reinstall from the Ghost image?
>> anyone agree?
yeah i do..... if you will restore.... nav folders will be not there.... but reigstries will..... using the utilities will delete them again!

>> at worst....
means after a system restore....... hmm i think that it should go well IF you have some good restore points and system can allow to do a restore..... coz its a common problem that after playing around with norton.... user cannot use system restore..... so keep your fingers crossed..... and go for system restore! :)
I have restored, removed NAV with the RNAV too, SYMCLEAN and RNIS and guess what-cannot install NIS 2005 because previous componebts were not removed!

Norton used to make great products -what has happened!!!

I think I will do a reg clean, another systemstate back up and re-install zone alarm and bit defender. At least I have not suffered a BSOD since the restore.
>> Norton used to make great products
when did this happen...... i never used any "great" product from norton ;-)

>> another systemstate back up and re-install zone alarm and bit defender
dont install them at one time...... install one and use system for some time..... check if BSOD is back..... if no them move on and install the second...... that will tell us that which one is causing BSOD! :)

>> Norton used to make great products<<
>>when did this happen...... i never used any "great" product from norton ;-)<<

IMO, up to the 2003 release.

I believe the BSOD was not caused by ZA or Bitdefender. Something else must have happened.

We may never know.

But I do agree, do it step by step.

Zee
yes, I agree. I suppose I have to decide what is the more important-Internet Security or AV. I am betting on IS, so tomorrow I will install Zone Alarm. The system seems stable at the moment-30 minutes without a crash. I have backed up the system state once more. I have also removed Norton Utilities and Ghost, + common files, so there is no Symantec left on the PC.
well..... good luck :)

Good luck,

Zee
Thanks, guys. I will be back tomorrow to deal out points-if the who lot works agan. As for Norton products-well, I have just noticed that I am running with about 60mb more of physical memory!
>> I have just noticed that I am running with about 60mb more of physical memory!
lol...... you will notice many more good things..... carry on..... ;-)
Progress: Installed Zone Alarm-so far so good. I am a bit annoyed that BitDefender did not clean up on uninstalling (using their unistaller), leaving three services set to automatic.(The registry entry does not exist because of my system state restore). Also, the Symantec ScriptBlocking Service was still running.

If all goes well, I will install BitDefender again.

Norton has been consigned to history. RIP

Please be patient with the points.

RIP
:))
no hurry dude..... take your time..... wish you good luck! :)
Hi, thanks for your support guy! I have applied for a refund with Symantec, although the customer service e-mail report would not accept ANY valid e-mail address. However, this is a problem with Digital River. They resolved the issue. The KNEW that I had not installed the product (scary!), so I am getting money back. I now have ZA and Bitdefender running. 4 hours later, no problems.

>>They KNEW that I had not installed the product (scary!)<<

Of course, they know how bad the product is...
;-)

Thanks!

Zee
congrats on an error-free running system! Cheers ^_^
The zone alarm pro suite has spyware remover antivirus and a great firewall but u can also purchase norton security suite 2005 im suggesting this because if u had the av u probably trust the symatic company and want there full protection.
P.S: Any norton program is a huge resources user.
and Zone alarm firewall will reduce ur internet speed not alot but will surely do.
