Outlook 2003, POP3, always asks for pw

I run Outlook 2003, POP3 to Yahoo...

Works great...

EXCEPT, when I set it to POP at regular intervals, say every 10 minutes...it always asks me for a pw...
I can check the "save pw" box...makes no difference...

But when I'm in Outlook and hit the send/recieve button, it works perfectly...

And in Email Accounts I have the save pw checked...

Any ideas???

Thanx

Greetings, stevem5000 !

Is the Yahoo account a free account. Maybe the check interval is too often.  Try checking every 30 minutes.

See this troubleshooter for Outlook or Outlook Express Password Not Retained

Best wishes!

Do you have the outgoing server checked to: login using, user name and password?
if so check the save my password there.

It asks for a password when the server rejects the one you sent it, however the rejection causing this behaviour in Outlook may not be a password rejection.
Many "free" services impose restrictions on your connection to their mail servers, if checking less frequently makes password request go away then this is likely to be the problem.

Sometimes Outlook just messes up, instead of changing the settings, remove the account from Outlook then recreate it, ensuring you save the correct password.

Thanx guys...

The Yahoo account is not free...I subscribe to my DSL thru SBC Global and they are one of the "business partners" of Yahoo...I sign up at SBC and the Yahoo is automatic...

All pw check boxes are checked...and when Outlook is open, and I hit the send/recieve button, everything works perfectly...POP's and SMTP's correctly...then in a few minutes the screen pops up, like it was trying to log into Yahoo at the timed interval, and I get the error screen requireing a pw...

About 3 months ago I rebuilt this computer, I had Office XP on it, but this time I installed Office 2003...
I never had a problem with Outlook XP...and the 2003 version started this about 2-3 weeks ago...

I'll try removing the account and re-establishing it...I don't think that will do it, but that's about the only thing I can think of that I HAVEN'T done...

Appreciate any other ideas...

Steve
Steve, update Outlook 2003 to service pack 2, which recently came out.

This expands on war1's first post, and includes outlook 2003.

I found the kb link in this thread to be outdated, but similar problem to what you are experiencing.  I believe the kb article that's linked in this thread is now found at the url I posted above.

Steve,

We have not heard from you in awhile. Did any comment help you solve your problem? Do you have any more questions? If an Expert helped you, please accept his/her answer above with an excellent or good grade.

Thanks, war1
Sorry...had to make a quick trip out of town...

I did install SP2 and that made NO difference...I thought that would do it...but no joy...

Will try the registry edit next...

Report back in a couple days...
Thanx for your patience...
Steve
Steve, rereading your question, the problem seems like a timing issue. Go to the Outlook account settings, Advanced tab.  Increase the timeout time from 1 minute to 10 minutes.

As I posted before, checking every 10 minutes may be too much for Yahoo POP3 servers.  So set the interval to 30 minutes.
Well, I have increased the timeout to 10 minutes...no joy...

I did the registry edit...no joy...

I have removed my account, rebooted and re-installed my account...no joy...

Now I'm re-installing office...we'll see if that helps...

googling everywhere...but so far...nada...

Thanx for all the input...

Check back tomorrow...nite time...
Well...this really getting on my nerves...

I have reset the pw's...removed and re-installed the email account...
Last night I reinstalled Office 2003...removed it again and re-installed it from a DIFFERENT original CD...

And I STILL...get this same error message...

Task 'pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC92) : 'Your e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your account properties. Under Tools, click E-mail accounts.  The server responded: -ERR maildrop unavailable.'

Anyone with any ideas???

War1...
You MIGHT have something here...
I run Sygate on this machine...the free version...and as I'm thinking thru this, I think my problems started about the time I installed Sygate...

Outlook is configured to "allow"...but there are a bunch of services that I don't know what they are are set to "ask"...

I'll go thru those one at a time, identify them and see if any of them are related to POP or SMTP services...

Good idea...thanx...

Back later
Steve
Steve, keep us updated.
Well...it seems stable...so far...

Here is my deal...
Sygate firewall
Trend Micro full version...firewall turned off...
Counterspy

I went thru all the services that Sygate identified as "ask" and found 1 "suspecious" and blocked it...Turned 2-3 others on to "allow"...
Didn't make any change...
Then I turned Sygate off, went thru TM and "readjusted" my settings there...not sure if that made any difference...
Checked M$oft updates, nothing new to install there...
Then I redid the registry edit...rebooted...
Then I  reapplied the Outlook password...
Then I turned Sygate on and so far the box has not popped up...about 20-30 minutes or so now...

In it's worst it would pop up about as often as I had Outlook set to go out and POP Yahoo...usually every 3 minutes...so if it hasn't poped up by now, I suspect it won't...

Here is the deal...I don't really know what I did that seemed to solve the issue...possibly several things added together did it...maybe only one of them that I cannot identify...but I think the key suggestion is War1 on checking firewall stuff and the post on the registry edit...I suspect those 2 suggestions in some combination did the trick...but I cannot put my finger on exactly which...

Many, Many thanx for the comments and ideas...

Steve
It just came back...took almost 30 minutes...
So I guess it's a partial success...it's taking longer to pop up...
Steve
Steve, glad we can work together to solve an unusual problem.
Yeah...but I gotta figgure this out...it shouldn't be...

Do some more research...maybe I can find something...

Thans for the help...

Steve
Steve, it seems to be due to Sygate.  Does Sygate have different options?  Try turning off all the options except for the basic firewall.
It does have a pretty good selection of things to turn on and off...allow/block/ask...

The trick is finding what is affecting POP and SMTP...

Gonna look over the Sygate website knowledgebase next...hope they have one...

I'll keep banging on this as I have time...but at least the error message seems to be around a 30 minute cycle...
So that part is better...

Thanx
Steve
