Notepad C:/WINDOWS/system32/smss.exe error
Here is the deal,
I have an Inspiron 8000 Dell laptop, with a Pentium III processor with 256 MB of RAM, and Windows XP home edition. Today I tried to start notepad and it gave me this error: "The C:\WINDOWS\system32\smss.e xe application cannont be run in Win32 mode." So i searched the net for a solution. I used my virus scanner, AVG Anti-Virus System, to scan my computer for a virus, and it came up with nothing. So i don't know whether this is a virus or not but there is definetly some kind of problem. Help would be appreciated!

Finally if no virus is found and once after you download Hijack this go to start run type SFC /SCANNOW and hit enter this will check for file corruption but only do this after you have ran housecall otherwise you could cause worse problems if you do this on top of an active virus
Hi!
Before you run HijackThis, download and run CWShredder, and let it fix all that it finds (you might have to run it in "safe" mode)
You can download CWShredder from the following:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
Or:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?...6c5901960cc6e24
Then run HijackThis and post a log-file here, and we'll take a look at it.
The key is the HijackThis log-file - also, make sure you have the option "Show all files", including "system" and "hidden",
turned on.
Any problems - let us know!
Awaiting your response!
Good luck!

I don't think this is a virus issue.
Running a confidance scan with another product, as recommended above, is always a good idea, as is keeping up with _all_ updates, including Windows, AV, applications...
having a smss.exe in your sys32 folder is normal and not an indication of a virus (in your windows folder is another story)
Chasing viruses in this instance will mostlikely not give results. I'd recommend the 'check for file corruption' options, again as recommended above.
hope this adds some confidance ;-)
