If you're an member of the Experts Exchange community, you've probably heard of this Netminder character.

For those who don't know, Netminder is one of EE's two Senior Site Administrators (along with Computer 101), joining the EE community 10 years ago today (Oct. 29, 1999), probably using that nifty new browser update everyone was raving about back then (Netscape Communicator 4.6.1).

It wasn't long before Mr. Netminder and his <evil twisted grin> were asked to be a Moderator, and by November 2002 he was named Site Admin -- AKA kingpin of our community volunteers.

Netminder has gone on to become a cornerstone of Experts Exchange, but if you're an avid member of the community, you already know all that.

What you didn't know about Netminder ...

He's a banana slug. Yep, the Netminder is a proud graduate of UC Santa Cruz ... so if someone slithers through your Q&A thread and deposits sticky *laughing* trails behind, you know who did it.

"If Netminder wasn't giving me a hard time, I wouldn't think I was doing my job right," EE Marketing Director Jonathan Hoekman said. "He really is a key element to the success of our site.  All joking aside, even though he does give us plenty of butt chewings, there is no question that his heart is all about EE and his goal is to make the site the best it can possibly be."

Luckily for Jonathan and Co., Netminder enjoys giving the corporate office a hard time on a regular basis. In fact, Netminder spends as much as 18 hours a day on EE, according to his better half, and still finds time to tend to their garden.  Something else I bet you didn't know about Netminder -- he loves roses and fresh, homegrown veggies.

"He has a heart of gold and nerves of steel," his wife says. "He has the greatest tolerance level of anyone I have ever met whether it be in business or his personal life, always thinking of others first and himself last, yet not afraid of speaking his mind nor voicing his opinion."

Thanks to that persistence and dedication, from Netminder as well as all of our Badgers, the EE community has remained strong -- enduring recession, dot-com busts, and, well, another recession.

"Without him being that rock," EE Creative Director Mark Barbir said, "EE wouldn't be where it is today."

Something else you didn't know about Netminder? He's also done time as a high school basketball coach and referee.

The coaching background comes in handy in training new volunteers on the site. The officiating background comes in handy when users are acting foul in a thread. But that's what good Admins do -- they lay the smackdown when necessary, not because they enjoy it, but because they respect the concept of community ... and making that community the best that it can be.

"For me, knowing Netminder is on duty," Customer Service Manager Chris Hiatt said, "is my safety net if you will."

And that "Net" has been in place for 10 years and counting, making EE more than "just a website."

But enough from us here at the EE headquarters. Let's hear your favorite Netminderisms and stories from fellow Badgers and Experts in the EE community.

Share your congrats in the comment section below. Just be sure to watch out for skunks and remember that Ooops is not a four-letter word.

Here's to 10 years of Netminder!

Thanks for everything our friend.

10 Years at EE, what a journey it must have been -- amazing dedication -- truly a phenomenal effort...

And a very special thanks for all your help and support that does make being a part of Experts Exchange so much more enjoyable.

<<"He has a heart of gold and nerves of steel," his wife says>>

I can't second that more then enough; I've been at the hair pulling stage on EE several times and N has always surfaced with calm, cool, and reassuring words, which brings me to my favorite Netminderisms:

"Don't ever get in a pissing match with a skunk".

I've taken that to heart along with many other lessons as well and believe I am a better person for it not just with EE, but with life in general.

I can't imagine EE without him and I am quite sure that EE would not be the site it is today without him.

Thank you in so many ways for a fantastic ten years.   Looking forward to the next ten and new lessons to be learned.

My hat is off to you along with a very deep bow...

Jim.

"The officiating background comes in handing when users are acting foul in a thread."

This probably should be rewritten. But we'll let Netminder issue the reprimand on that; your humble editor is taking the day off. For my part, it is noted that the author DID work for McClatchy, which explains a lot... <chuckle>

I have it on good authority that the 7th grade basketball team he is currently coaching is, of course, the Badgers. It is one of life's more entertaining bits of serendipity that they represent Mark Twain school as well.

I've been trying to remember the first time I was contacted by Netminder, and can't seem to recall.... he just gives you that comfortable feeling like you've known him forever... and every encounter I've ever had with him has exhibited all of those wonderful qualities mentioned above.

Congratulations, dear heart, on ten years of a truly magnificent job!  Not only talented, but a sweet sweet man who will (as I jokingly tell him) always be my BFF :)

Can't remember who did Netminder's great job 10 years ago, but IIRC there was none.
So I'd give congratulations and shake hands (virtually) to Netminder for his always imaginative gentle and humoric comments and answers even to the sometimes scary questions from Admins, Volinteers, PEs etc. in the EE community.

Thanks for all the great work over the years. I always marvel at your ability to handle the cantankerous, opinionated lot of us. It's hard to believe that you've put up with us all for a decade already.

Here's to many more ahead. EE just wouldn't be the same without you.

You have taught me a great deal about the gentle arts of negotiation and diplomacy,
I think I'm also now the proud owner of an associate diploma by default in Mephitis Mephitis evacuation habits and what not to do when in their company (see skunks and pissing).

Thanks for lending me your ear on occasions too numerous to count.  I agree with the comments made about you being the EE safety net, the place is so much better for having you.  A huge  congratulations from me on making 10 years (and your wife for suffering through 18 hours a day of them)!

With fond memories looking back over 10 years of growth together...
Our dear Netminder has the patience where many have failed,  his smooth nature encouraged us on but he was never discouraged by us.
He brought reason where chaos reigned.
He has the wit of a master combined and can make you laugh until the tears fall..
Congratulations Netminder .....10 years is a milestone and you're truely the cement that links together the chain of Experts Exchange and it's members.
You're efforts are applauded and appreciated.... Alll points awarded !!

Net who?

Neverminder?

Is he a trend mine? Or is he a communist metal man from the wizard of Oz (Red Tin Men).

Minder was a TV program in the UK in the 80's. Stared George Cole and Dennis Waterman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minder_(TV_series)).

Oh. He ties a good tie too!

Congrats to all the hard work. Surely time to hand over the reigns now? Retire. Feet up. Enjoy a bottle or too of vino and relax???

Ha. Some chance.

See you in the funn-ee pages.

Regards,

Richard.

According to Netminder's profile page he registered on 07/01/02, which is about as ambiguous as you could get. But unless you strange Americans have started putting the year in the middle, this is surely 7th January or 1st July 2002?

In which case, when I registered in 11/01/00 does that mean I've been there 2 years more than NM? Where's my badge!

After reading your reply, it's clear for me that you are indeed the coach figure in Experts-Exchange. I remember that right after the alerts for neglected questions appeared, you'd still check in and e-mail to some experts the link in order to help the user. So, congratulations man. Well deserved.

So you joined when I was still in my first year at EE... Wasn't that, like, last millennium or something? Time flies...

What I do remember is that you were the first of the staff to actually contact me. I think you were looking for additional page editors, something like that. Although I declined, my first contact with what happens "behind the scenes" changed my perspective. I felt honoured. I was no longer a user, I became an Expert.

In many ways, and that's not my opinion alone, you were the Ambassador of EE for many of us, and often the only person of reference. You are incredibly nice and a true gentleman: this projects a very good image of "the people at EE" to all experts you had to deal and contend with.

Hereby receive the honorary and unofficial title of "Minister of Expert Affairs".

How about a ROAST instead of Cake? (LOL) It's more appropriate when your looking at the meat and potatoes of EE.

You know, I have to ask something>   Where would EE be without the big N?

I have been around for a few short years and have seen Netminder be the very first person to  pop by when a thread is opened to make EE better. He is so precise, listens to suggestions, and (I swear)  molds EE into his own image.

EE is not just a forum where the Big N can assist others with his expertise. It's a place where he listens to ideas, and  takes his midas touch, to make gold out of the forum. He also polices the bad boys and girls.

I wouldn't be on EE today if it were not for the well planned, non-convoluted, User interface. I wouldn't be on this site helping others without the lack of cut throat experts that I have seen on other forums.

I have to say, other tech forums  can't hold a nat fart to EE because of the constant upkeep and improvements.

See what happens....Ten years of weighing out ideas the midas touch and everything is golden.

Congrats Big N.
