The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

ODBC connect to Progress with MS access

Tags: progress, odbc, access, connect
I need to connect to Progress Dbase using MS access for generating reports.  The progress dBase is on HP UX unix box and I would be using Access 2002 or if better Access 2000.  I do not need to change info in any of the dbase just read only acces.

Thanks

Have u got a ODBC driver? Im not familiar with the settings of this driver but there must be some address of the database which you can specify.
Once u have this driver configured, u can use MSAccess to link tables (File/Get External Data - select odbc databases, find your ODBC DSN entry and select tables u desire)

u could try their website possibly http://www.progress.com/openedge/support/index.ssp
data direct do some also http://www.datadirect.com/index.ssp

Ill check these out, it is the driver I am haveing issues getting.  I understand I will need a progress ODBC type driver for Progress 8.1c  and am totaly confused how and or where to 1)get the correct driver and after that 2)how to use it............

Ill dig somemore with the sites u gave me.

Thanks

any help with the configuration will help to resolve this connection issue,

I know  I need to add ODBC, but is it User DSN Sys DSN or File DSN?
Guess is System but I dont know

then the config wiz opens with
name for data source?   I am guessing this can be anything
Description of data source? Anything here probably as well..
Server to connect to?  can this b and IP (129.0.1.121) or does it need to be this pecas.nordic.com

next page

Which dbase to connect to
Domain?  this seems to refer to the dbase serever format ie Progress 8.1c
Database?  the ????name of the specific dbase?????
DB Connection options?  do I put anything here?

Login ID
Password
Im sure these are the logins used that would access the dbase to the level needed.

Ive gotta run for the day, but your help in this has gotten my moving and I think in the correct direction.

I am wondering, Is this a multipart question for the experts?.....

User DSN means only person who created can see it
System DSN means its global to all

Is it a static IP address? I suggest u try both, but Im sure pecas.nordic.com points to the IP Address anyway

Im not sure about what to put in the domain

dont know if this helps

Before version 9 of Progress, there is no ODBC included in the Progress server as a standard module.
So if you can upgrade to Progress version 9 (with ODBC build-in), that may be a simpler solution.
Some products (like Mfg/Pro 8.x or 9.0) claim they do not run on Progress 9, but in fact they run fine.
Progress is backwards compatible.

On progress version 8.x you have to install a 3rd party ODBC product on the client (which translates the ODBC calls to progress calls) or an ODBC server on the server (so you can connect from any pc with standard ODBC).  Whether you prefer to install a solution on the server or on each desktop depends on your budget and situation.

The available ODBC products for Progress version 8 are:
- Esker Tun SQL
- Intersolv DataDirect ODBC
- OpenLink ODBC (MT)
- OpenLink Lite (Small Client, and Large Client)

An excellent ODBC FAQ for Progress version 8.x explaining in detail what works and what doesn't work, can  be found here:

Thanks for all the help,  I still have not completely resolve the total issue, but this has gotten me over the wall and I think I can take it from here.  The PDF seems to be very good and the OpenLink ODBC driver seems promising for what I need to do.  Thanks again
